Dear Parents/Caregivers

Week five and the classroom routines are in full swing across the school. The children are all super keen and enthusiastic to embrace school life . Children are loving connecting with their teachers and friends.

A very special welcome to our 25 new entrants who have all settled into the start of their learning journey in the nest.

We would like to acknowledge the amazing job you, our community, are doing in helping us to keep our tamariki and our community safe. At times like this, I am very grateful and privileged to be leading Chapel Downs School at a time of uncertainty through the continued Covid pandemic.

Health, safety and wellbeing continue to be a priority for us and the same public health measures you are very familiar with will remain in place:

While we are at Red Level L3:

  • Keep children home if they are unwell
  • If there is covid case in your household, keep children home for 10 days
  • If you, your child or a household member contracts COVID-19, then PLEASE ring or email us immediately after you receive a positive test.
  • Masks will be required at school when indoors for students in Years 4 – 6. Please use surgical masks.
  • We ask that only essential visitors come onsite and check in at the school office
  • Y2-Y6 children are to enter the school independently and go straight to their class
  • Y2-Y6 parents are not able to come on site except to go to the office
  • Y1 (A1-A7) children can be accompanied by parents for drop off and pick up only
  • Any queries, please come to the school office wearing your mask and scan in

Learning in Action

Our children are all loving their learning this term. We are so fortunate to have a very dedicated team who love providing our students with rich learning experiences.

ACHIEVING TOGETHER

Swimming

This term we again fortunite to be selected for the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation free swimming lessons at the Otara Leisure Centre through the Community Swim Programme. Community Swim is proudly sponsored by the Lion Foundation, Auckland Council, Potter Masonic Trust and Water Safety New Zealand.

All Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 children are involved in this term swimming programme with Community Swim . They have eight 25 minute learn to swim lessons that are delivered by qualified swimming instructors. The lessons are free and the bus to take the children to the pools each week is also free. Teachers will accompany the children each week.

A14, A15, A16, B19, B23, B26, B27, B28 & B29 have their swimming lessons on Monday’s - Last day Monday 4 April

A17, B18, B21, B22, B24, B25, B30 will have their swimming lessons on Wednesday’s - Last day Wednesday 6 April

Your child will need to bring these items each session:

  • a pair of swimming togs
  • a named towel
  • a waterproof bag or plastic bag to put the wet togs and towel in after the lessons each week
  • jandals, slides or slippers for going to the from the pools

If your child owns a pair of swimming goggles, the Community Swim Programme manager, Amanda Meyrick, recommends that children bring these along too as goggles will assist considerably with learning to swim.

All swimming staff are trained through Swimming New Zealand and hold a current First Aid Certificate. They also attend in-house training with Swimsation. Instructors are always upskilling with training workshops and appraisals. The goal is to enable all children to develop the basic skills of swimming to help keep them safe in the water.

Our expectation is that all children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will participate in the swimming programme. If your child is medically unfit to participate, a doctor’s certificate must be provided. Thank you for your support.
