J King Images A Guide to get the best from your headshot Session

What Happens During A Headshot Session?

All photographers have a different approach when it comes to headshots. My approach is to make it fun, collaborative and ensure you look amazing. I view headshot sessions as a team effort. That’s why I tether to a computer during the shoot. You and I can review the images together. This way there are no surprises and we can make changes as needed.

I will coach you and direct you into poses most flattering for your unique physical traits.

At the end of the session, we will sit down together and select your favorites. A proof gallery will be made from those chosen. From there we will narrow it down to only the images you decide to purchase. You can finalize your decision at the end of the session or you can have a gallery to review at home.

Three Elements of A Killer Headshot

Confidence- Just by slightly tightening your lower eyelids ( a soft squint), you also tighten the surrounding muscles giving a more focused and confident appearance.

Approachability- Approachability comes from the mouth. A large genuine smile or a slight smirk, depending on the personality you want to convey, is the key to looking approachable.

Personality- Engage those eyebrows to show expression.

Just remember, everyone is photogenic. When you are being yourself and not worried about what you look like, you are your most attractive.

Should I Use A Makeup Artist For My Headshot?

I highly recommend, if possible, using a makeup artist for your headshot session. Everyone can benefit from having their makeup applied professionally before a shoot.

Most of my clients choose not to hire an MUA. If it’s in your budget, it is money well spent. If not, don’t sweat it. If you are comfortable applying your own makeup, apply a little more than usual. If you usually don’t wear any makeup, apply a little.

Professional grooming can prove beneficial before the shoot.

What Should I Wear?

When it comes to wardrobe, the most important thing is to bring clothes you love to wear. If you wear something you are not comfortable in, it will show. I shoot tethered to a laptop. If a clothing choice isn’t working, we will know and make the necessary wardrobe changes.

Avoid clothing with distracting patterns and super bright neon colors. I personally like more muted tones. I am a huge fan of the layered look with a fitted jacket or over shirt. Also avoid deep plunging necklines and sleeveless shirts. We don’t want anything to draw attention away from the face.

Bring options. If you don’t bring it, we can’t shoot it.

Retouching

Once your images are selected, they will be retouched. Any blemishes or small outbreak of acne can be taken care of with our suite of editing tools. We use these tools to soften wrinkles, whiten teeth, remove skin redness, and correct minor imperfections. This is all done to make you look like yourself on your best day. The key is to keep your headshot looking natural.
