KEVI Newsletter 12th May 2023

Senior Leadership Team Update

A lovely story which is currently growing at KEVI is the growth of gardening as a hobby! It is believed that the movement started with Mrs Johnson and members of 10AR but has recently spread to the rest of Arete and now other houses across the school. Arete have been planting and tending to their sunflower seedlings which are now around 6cm tall and are responding well to different methods of care. One group, 8AR, have named their sunflower and even sing to it regularly. Leading the way are 10AR, who with the expert help of garden enthusiast Mrs Johnson have all planted their own sunflowers and are tending to them daily. Some students have also planted tomatoes and cucumbers.

This week has seen the start of examination season with a small number of subjects including Y11 French and Y13 Business. Next week, however, is the first really busy week with examinations across the week including GCSE English, Science, Maths, History and Religious Studies. Year 11 and Year 13 students should be spending significant amounts of time revising this week and please see the Year 11 section for details of how to book a place at Saturday School.

Good luck to every student sitting examinations next week.

Have a lovely weekend

Mrs S Jones - Executive Principal & Mr M Wilkinson - Acting Head of School

This week has seen many students displaying one of our core values of courage through presentations in house assemblies. Each tutor group has been thinking about a charity they wish to nominate as their house charity and then created a pitch to deliver to the rest of the house. The presentations informed the audience about the work of the charity and why they wish to support them. Our students showed amazing courage to stand on the stage and deliver a presentation to a full hall. When we see people confidently presenting or performing on stage we can often overlook the fact they will likely have felt nervous and had to summon their KEVI courage. As the quote from Nelson Mandela shows us, courage is the conquering of fear. Well done to all students who presented this week!

Why we do what we do -Academy Rationale

Principle 10 in our Why we teach the way we do series

10. Engage students in weekly and monthly review

The final principle we are sharing with you is an extension of the first, but involves spacing out reviews of previous learning over weekly and monthly timeframes. This combination of spacing and retrieval is a strategy called successive relearning which involves spacing out the use of retrieval practice techniques on several occasions over time, until a certain level of mastery has been achieved (I.e. correctly retrieved from memory multiple times).

Successive relearning ensures students relearn content and maintain the ability to correctly retrieve this information. This allows them to make connections between new information and old knowledge, enhancing their understanding of a topic. All our lessons start with a Do Now task that often gets students to revisit information leaned in previous topics, our prep homework often gets students to revisit information from a previous week’s lesson and staff often complete knowledge checks revisiting knowledge with students in class.

This week we have had our charity presentations presented in assemblies. Well done to all those who took part in creating the presentations and presenting. You all showed your KEVI courage and the audience were respectful and supportive. A huge well done to 7 Arete who presented one of the best presentations. It was clear you had dedicated time to practice and work together to make the presentation flow.

Next week

House Rounders is scheduled to begin next week. The teams have been organised by the form captains and are ready. Year 11, 12 and 13 are kicking off the competition Monday. Remember to bring your trainers or you will not be allowed to take part.

Teen Support

Watching your child grow into a young adult is a massively rewarding experience. It is also a very challenging one and at times it can feel overwhelming. Learning how to build a positive relationship with your teenager represents an important step toward meeting that challenge. Children change so quickly during their teenage years it can often be very difficult to keep up as parents. By actively developing a positive relationship with your teenager you will both be better placed to cope with hormones, relationships, sex and changes in behaviour.

Parenting Teenagers

Above is a link to a great website that gives lots of advice about how you can best support your child at home.

We hope you find it useful.

Word of the Week :Augment

Augment: verb – to make something greater by adding to it; to increase. Origin Latin: augere – to increase.

She augmented the capability of her phone by adding more apps to it. His exam scores were augmented when he started to plan essays as revision practice. The seating in Gino’s was augmented when the new extension was opened.

Linked words: auxiliary: to provide additional help and support.

The auxiliary nurse supported the ward’s nursing team to provide superb care. The school provides auxiliary GCSE exam support on Saturday mornings and during holidays.

Maths

Wednesday 17th May 2023 is National Numeracy Day. We will be marking the occasion in school with a Numeracy focussed assembly and the launch of a school community challenge, The KEVI 1,000,000. Students are challenged to reach 1,000,000 questions answered correctly on Sparx Maths by the end of the academic year, our total currently stands at a phenomenal 694,455. Students who contribute to this success will be recognised each week in assembly and receive a reward.

We use maths in every aspect of our lives at work and in practical everyday activities at home and beyond. We use maths when we go shopping or plan a holiday, decide on a mortgage or decorate a room. Good numeracy is essential to us as parents helping our children learn, as patients understanding health information, as citizens making sense of statistics and economic news. Decisions in life are so often based on numerical information; to make the best choices, we need to be numerate.

If you would like to support you student with numeracy and instil a love of mathematics please see National Numeracy Day - Mindset Guide.

Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their times tables to help embed them in their long term memory.

At the end of each lesson, they will stand behind their chairs in silence, preparing for themselves for the next lesson and just before they leave the whole class will chant the timetables assigned for that week.

Week commencing 15/05/2023 - we will be chanting our 6 times table.

Accelerated Reader

KEVI20 WC 15th May Lesson 5

The Library is open at 8:30 am, break time and lunch time. KS3 students are expected to have an independent reading book as part of their equipment every day, ready for the daily KEVI 20 independent reading session and for reading time in English.

It’s definitely time for a huge shout out to all the KS3 readers who have been doing so well with their progress through their books. Each completed book quiz taken on Accelerated Reader logs the number of titles read, the scores achieved on every book and the total number of words read. We are seeing some amazing word totals!

  • Word Millionaires to date are:
  • Lincoln: 2,943,120 words!
  • AJ: 1,934,988 words!
  • Word Half Millionaires to date are:
  • Logan S: 976,279 words - just one quiz away from being a Word Millionaire!
  • Chloe M: 715,083 words
  • Ryland 609,311 words
  • Imogen: 579,901 words
  • Alf B: 532,288 words
  • TJ: 517,958 words

Many more students will be Word Half Millionaires, but need to quiz for their words to be counted. Get quizzing!

Congratulations are deserved by every student reading through their chosen books. It’s a delight to see students’ broadening vocabulary: in just one Y7 lesson this week, students encountered “masquerading”, “bounteous”, “pioneer” and “disembarked”. The exposure to broad and rich vocabulary that reading gives equips students to engage in the world into which they will move.

Library Opening Times

External examinations are with us and the Library is used on a daily basis as an examination room. Opening times will be severely restricted as a result. Opening days and times will be published for students outside the library and also via tutors and assemblies. Should students choose to read books from home, please Google “A R Bookfinder” where you will be able to check the level (BL) of more than 180,000 books.

Sports Enrichment

The summer term 5 timetable is in full swing and it is great to see lots of students participating in the sports clubs, ranging from Tennis, Rounders, Cricket and Athletics during lunch break and after school.

We have some upcoming Rounders fixtures against Skegness Grammar School next week which we are very much looking forward to.

For students to be selected for future fixtures and events, such as the prestigious Summer Cup, it is important that they attend clubs, where possible, to help develop their potential and aid team selection.

Timetable below along with the summer Cup 'save the date'.

If your child has any special sporting interests or achievements outside of school, please make us aware so we can help to support their future development. Feel free to email me on lburton@kingedwardacademy.co.uk.

Ms. L Burton - Sports Enrichment Officer

Year 7 Geographical Knowledge

Over the last couple of weeks Year 7 have been putting their theoretical geographical knowledge to the test. They have been investigating microclimates around the school site to understand how various factors can influence the local climate. Pupils have worked very well and improved their skills in a variety of techniques.

We must give a special mention to 7MC and 7AR who had the joy of completing as a thunder storm approached! Pupils really enjoyed this practical lesson and look forward to their next!
