THE PENN RADIATION ONCOLOGY SPOTLIGHT

December 2022

A Message from Dr. Metz

I want to wish everyone a very happy and healthy holiday season! It is great to see all the spirit of good will around the department! I want to complement the therapy team here at PCAM that went all out with the decorations this year and a bit of friendly competition. The past couple of months have been busy in the department as you see all the events our team has been engaged in the Spotlight. We had a productive Fall from an academic standpoint with many of our colleagues presenting at national and international meetings such as ASTRO, FRPT, and RRS, just to name a few. We have also started recruitment for our educational programs including medical residency, physics residency, and graduate programs—So thank you to everyone organizing the process and participating in interviews. We have had an outstanding recruitment season for new faculty; we will be making announcements after the New Year about the individuals that will be joining us in the near future.

I want to congratulate the entire team for the work in bringing up the new LGH proton center safely and with the highest quality. This the first single room center for Varian and we partnered to get FDA approval for the new gantry system that our team helped design and evaluate. I know many of you were involved to get this center up and operational; Thank you all for your support and commitment!! I am very proud of the team for all the work that was put in to bring this center up with the highest quality and standards. The same system is being installed at Virtua in South Jersey. We hope to get the Virtua system treating in February/March time frame.

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Happy Hanukah! Happy Kwanza! And happy everything else that you celebrate! I hope you are able to enjoy the holiday season with friends and family!

ASTRO Reception

Penn Radiation Oncology faculty, staff, alumni, and special guests gathered at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas for a reception during this year's ASTRO Conference.

First Proton Patient Treatments at Lancaster General Hospital

We received FDA approval for the new LGH proton facility in early December and treated the first patient at the facility on December 14! The first patient in the world was treated with this new technology at a Penn Medicine radiation oncology facility. None of this would have been possible without the entire team in physics, therapy, physicians, dosimetry, and administration who contributed to this milestone. We could not have done it without all of your engagement! Special thanks to Courtney Misher and Meghan Minner from therapy who took the lead in training the LGH team and were present for the practice runs and delivery of the first treatment. A number of patients are scheduled for simulation for proton therapy over the next couple of weeks, so things should ramp up in a steady fashion!

Iranian Protests – Context and Contemplation

Recent events in Iran bring to the forefront of our minds the battles that continue to be faced by groups marginalized by their society. The repression of women, together with the use of violence to maintain this status, directly contradicts the inherent value of the humanity that exists within every person. Below, we share further commentary, published by Penn Today, on the unconscionable killing of Mahsa Amini and the protests that rose in response to this act. We share our sadness with those affected by this violence and its roots in injustice.

Wellness & ACES

Wellness Wrap Up

Check out the different ways the Wellness Committee promoted employee wellness throughout the fall to their teams!

Dosimetry took one of their huddle meetings and turned it into a summer picture sharing meeting - everyone was asked to find up to 10 pictures from their summer and share with the group. This was a great way to get to know each other and keep up to date with everyone.

A group of physicians, medical residents, and physicists got together to play basketball at a park in Philadelphia during October. They plan to continue with more games in the future!

Gratitude jar at PPMC

Several teams created gratitude jars or boxes during the month of November, and employees were encouraged to drop small messages of gratitude when they felt compelled. The messages were opened at a meeting during the month, or a special time right before Thanksgiving. Remote teams were encouraged to send “high five” to a teammate from the UPHS home page or use the Rad Onc recognition page.

At Doylestown, the team had over 15 submissions of co-workers thanking one another, providing specific instances, and reasons for showing gratitude. These were read out loud to the entire team during our daily huddle, right before Thanksgiving. Because there was such great feedback from the staff, they are planning to do a similar New Year's Resolution Box.

At PPMC, the team gathered recently and opened their gratitude jar. They read a message aloud and passed the jar around the room. It was great to share messages of appreciation, big and small, with our colleagues. Team members shared that they felt good about themselves and about each other. The exercise was enjoyed so much that they chose to keep the jar around and will continue to add messages of gratitude. They plan to share the messages with each other periodically.

Cape Regional Friendsgiving

At Cape Regional, staff brough in a dish to share for a "Friendsgiving" lunch. they had a staff "Friendsgiving" lunch. They also created a bulletin board for both patients and staff to write a note of thanks.

Five Questions With...

Brian Kempsey, MHI, BSRT (R) (T)

Charge Therapist at PCAM

1. What is a typical work day like for you?

Each day is different as we come across various situations and challenges on a daily basis. As a Charge Radiation Therapist at PCAM, we are responsible for attending morning huddles, coordinating care for urgent inpatients and CHOP anesthesia patients, assist with anything therapy managers may need and help ensure the overall flow in the department.

2. What led you to work at Penn Radiation Oncology?

Early in my radiation therapy career, I worked for smaller cancer centers in Pennsylvania and Delaware. During that time, we would refer quite a few patients to Penn Medicine for Proton Therapy or other treatment modalities which we did not offer. This inspired me to pursue a career at Penn Medicine in order to be a part of a team leading the way in medicine offering the most innovative and technologically advanced treatments.

3. What is your favorite family tradition or recipe?

My favorite family tradition is our annual vacation to Ocean City, New Jersey. Every summer, my father’s side of the family spends a week or two “down the shore”. It has been a great family tradition we have kept over the years and I love spending quality time with my ever-growing family. We are up to about 35 people which provides for endless entertainment and laughter.

4. What are you currently watching/streaming?

I recently watched the new Bruce Springsteen interview on HBO. He has led a fascinating life over the years and it was interesting to hear first-hand stories about his upbringing and career. Overall, it was an impressive interview that was intermixed with some really great acoustic performances. Aside from that, I have been streaming the newest season of “The Crown”, old episodes of “Friends” and “Schitt’s Creek”.

5. This year I tried….

This year I tried to be more spontaneous, as I am a planner. I think I took this notion to the extreme and got married in Las Vegas! We had been discussing our wedding over the past two years and when other plans fell through, we had a perfect opportunity for a spur of the moment trip to Vegas. We got married in December of last year and it was an amazing, stress-free, experience!
