Negative Effects of Social Media on College Students
Over the recent years, it has become a normal occurrence for people to pour large amounts of time into social media cites. Many people use these cites for connecting to friends and family, but they are also used for gaming. Social Media, if overused, can be very costly to college students, for this reason schools should offer a social media course. Even though this course would cost the schools money to provide and the students to take it, it would be worth it, because it would help students to see the negative effects that overusing these cites is having on them, such as education accomplishments, and lessons on making wise time decisions. Just telling students to be careful how much they use social media, is not a working solution, they need to see for themselves.
It Will Cost the Schools and Students Money.
Starting up new things can be expensive. Providing a class on social media use should be a priority though. Colleges will have to raise resources and funds in order to put together a course that is intended to educate on social media. The cost of having a social media class, would also fall on the students, since they would have to pay to take the course. This class though, would allows the students to learn about something that is greatly affecting their lives, that they may not be aware of. For this reason, the costs of creating this course would be worth it, and would benefit the students.
Social Media Affects Academic Accomplishment.
One of the worst affects that social media overuse has on college students though, is that it can prohibit them from achieving what they are capable of academically. Social media cites such such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, have a vast number of fun activities to participate in online. Many people would say that they were just getting on to check their status quickly, but then end up getting easily sucked in to more. In many cases the student should have been using that time to do their school assignments, but instead wasted it on social media. Situations like this tend to result in the student receiving lower grades from lack of studying. This can play into the student's life after college, because if they do not receive good grades, then they will have a harder time finding a job.
The Class Will Help With Time Decisions.
As stated previously, overusing social media takes away from time that the students could have been doing his or her school work. Some students struggle with slotting certain times to do certain things. Having this social media class would be an excellent help on teaching students good time management. It is not bad to use social media cites, it only becomes bad when they are overused. Taking this class would show students how important it is to finish your responsibilities before pouring time into these cites. College students after taking this class, would be able to have the knowledge they need to choose to make wise decisions with his or her time.
Telling Students to be Cautious With Their Time is Not Enough.
For a long time the only thing that the older generation has been telling college age students about social media use, is to use their time wisely. While this is a valid and very important statement, it is not enough. Students need to see how social media overuse is affecting them, and experience it themselves. Taking a social media course would allow the students to see the reality behind the previous statement. Doing research projects on how spending too much time on social media cites instead of working on responsibilities, will allow the students to understand how it affects them. For these reasons, having a social media course is important to helping students live better life styles.
Even though providing a social media course would cost schools and students money, it is very important to make this course, because it will help students to do better academically, manage his or her time better, and over all; would be a better solution than just telling students to watch how they use their time. Social media cites have good uses, but is they are not kept in moderation, then they can negatively affect the lives of college students.
