Dogs were a vital part of WW1 navigating the trenches and braving the western front. Many dog breeds were used the war and all sides were believed to use them.
These dogs did the jobs that humans didn't want to do or joined them in their work.
Dogs have been used ever since they've started to be tamed. The first world war was no exception.
Germany: 30,000
France, Belgium, and Britain: 20,000
Italy: 3,000
Legacy: Dogs (like stated earlier) have been used in wars and battles since they began with humans, but WW1 did something really special. It amplified the use of dogs in war and showed people dogs can do a lot of good. In WW1 and dog earned the title of a Sargent and captured and enemy spy. This will not be the only instance of dogs doing amazing things. A dog named Chips will earn a silver star and purple heart in WW2. Military dogs will effect every war that follows. Dogs will continue to fight in every battle.
