Dear Colleagues,
As we reflect on the achievements of last year, we are proud to have launched the new Wayne State Transfer Pathways program and the Transfer Student Living Learning Community. However, we also saw opportunities to do more.
This year will have a special focus on improving the transfer credit experience. It will start with internal updates but include new tools and resources for students and advisors. In this newsletter, we will introduce you to the Transfer Equivalency Self-Service (TESS) tool, which will allow students to know exactly how their transfer credits apply to specific academic programs. We’ll be rolling out additional updates throughout the year.
As always, we want your feedback and to find ways to better work together, so please keep in touch with us! We think this is going to be another great year!
With Warrior pride,
Michael Quattro, Director of Educational Outreach and Transfer Initiatives, Wayne State University

WSU, Henry Ford College announce partnership to guarantee college access, transfer opportunities
Henry Ford College and Wayne State University recently announced a guaranteed-transfer partnership that will expand access to college degrees. The Henry Ford College Learn4ward and Wayne State Transfer Pathways program allows qualified students to earn two college degrees and maximize credits they earn while completing an associate degree.
Debt-forgiveness program expanded to help more former students with debt but no degree
Wayne State University has expanded its popular Warrior Way Back program, increasing the threshold for debt forgiveness and enabling students with an outstanding balance of up to $4,000 to re-enroll and “learn” away their past-due balances and earn a college degree. When Warrior Way Back launched in 2018, the debt threshold was $1,500.
$6 million grant from Mellon Foundation to increase Black studies faculty and establish the Detroit Center for Black Studies
The Mellon Foundation awarded a $6 million grant to Wayne State University to launch a cluster hire program that will recruit and hire 30 new humanities faculty and create the Detroit Center for Black Studies. The grant advances Wayne State’s work to build a more inclusive and equitable university by prioritizing faculty and research centered on the Black experience.
Program Highlights
The Transfer Equivalency Self-Service (TESS) tool helps prospective transfer students determine how their transfer credits will translate toward a Wayne State degree. TESS provides an unofficial degree audit that indicates how transfer credit is applied and which courses are still required to complete a chosen degree at WSU. TESS follows a step-by-step workflow to create a transfer evaluation and run a degree audit.

Transfer student spotlights
BRIANNA BACON
Major: Urban Studies
Transferred from: Macomb Community College
Tips for transfer students: Always plan ahead of time! I preferred mapping out transferable credits on a semester-by-semester basis just to ensure I was always staying on track. Knowing your degree requirements is essential when transferring. It's also important to understand transfer agreements; make sure the credits you've earned will count towards your degree.
What attracted you to WSU: Being an urban studies major, I was immediately attracted to everything Midtown had to offer. Wayne State's proximity to downtown has always been a huge advantage in my eyes. I'm also a big fan of museums, so having the DIA and the Detroit Historical Museum within walking distance always gives me something fun to do on weekends. (Pro tip: Macomb, Wayne and Oakland county residents get in for free at the DIA – take advantage of it!)
Favorite place on campus: Despite avoiding science classes for as long as I can remember, I must admit the STEM Building has some of the best views on campus. The seventh floor is one of my favorite places to study; the walls are lined with high-top chairs and communal desks are scattered throughout. There's tons of room (and always enough chairs).
Post-graduation plans: I'd like to attend graduate school to receive my master's in urban planning. Post-graduation, I would love to pursue work in the City of Detroit.
Favorite quote: “If you love nature, stay the heck away from it. Live in a city, the denser the better.”
