Women's Lacrosse Marches to the Elite-8
After topping Babson College last Saturday (20-8), the 12th-ranked Colby Women's Lacrosse team advanced to the Sweet-16 of the NCAA Tournament hosted at Middlebury College.
On Saturday the Mules faced The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), champions of the NJAC conference and winners of their first two NCAA rounds a week ago. Behind four early goals by Ally Franz, the Mules built a 7-5 lead at the half, extended it to 11-7 after the third, and held on to a 14-9 victory to advance to the Elite-8 for the second straight year.
Franz led scorers with five goals while Sarah Hearns tallied 11 saves in goal.
Facing the top-ranked Middlebury Panthers on Sunday, the Mules looked to avenge two losses from earlier in the season. Down 8-4 at halftime and 9-6 after the third quarter, Middlebury maintained a step ahead of Colby for the remainder, ending the road for the Mules 12-7.
Separated by only five goals, the Mules gave the Panthers (21-0) their closest match of the season. Hearns recorded a career-high 17 saves in net, reaching double-digit saves in all three NCAA tournament games this spring.
With Sunday's game slated on the same day as graduation, Colby held a special ceremony Monday for the five seniors and their families.
The Women's Lacrosse team ends their season with a 14-6 record.
