Physical Education (P.E) at Moorlands Primary School

Intent

The intent of the P.E. curriculum is designed to encourage maximum participation and enjoyment through high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that supports, challenges, and inspires all children to succeed in physical activities.

The intention is to develop the fundamental skills of movement, before then developing fundamental sports skills, applying these to a wide variety of sports, games and activities as children progress through school.

Through the Beyond the Physical Scheme, we intend to track all children’s progress in Key Stage 1 and 2.

We also intend for children to learn health-related knowledge to make better informed decisions about how to live a healthy and active lifestyle and the benefits PE can have on their social, emotional, and mental health.

Implementation

Pupils at Moorlands participate in twice weekly, high-quality PE lessons. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports and fundamental skills which are revisited and built upon as they move through school. The sports our children focus on link to their interests and mirror what is available to them within the local community allowing us to build links with local clubs in the area.

Children begin with ‘fundamental movement skills’ in order to provide a foundation for physical activity and sport in the future. These skills are developed continually as they move through school allowing them to begin to apply them to modified sporting games and activities. PE lessons will allow children to progress their learning at a pace suitable for them through the implementation of the STEP Principle which allows activities to be adapted to both support and challenge.

Throughout their time at Moorlands the children will learn how to cooperate and collaborate with others. Be part of a team, become self-motivated, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Sport Premium Funding is used to enhance the teaching and learning of the PE curriculum by employing expert teachers and coaches to deliver and assess the children’s progress in high quality PE lessons. This also delivers excellent CPD opportunities for teaching staff who will implement this in all their P.E lessons and ensure the longevity of quality teaching of the P.E curriculum at Moorlands.

We are part of the Pennine Sports Partnership who support with the implementation of our PE curriculum and beyond.
