Our Curriculum Pontypridd High School

The Curriculum Journey

The world is changing rapidly, with huge advances in technology, lifestyles and the world of work. These changes have real implications for what, and how our children need to learn.

Our teachers have created a bespoke curriculum within each area of learning which focuses on knowledge, skills and experience. The emphasis on specific skill development within literacy, numeracy and digital competency are essential. These became the building blocks for our curriculum design.

Our curriculum in year 7 has specific themes that improve knowledge and understanding but most importantly give students excellent learning opportunities that focus on improving skills in literacy, numeracy and digital competency.

The year 7 themes of learning are :

Autumn Term- No one is too small to make a difference.

Spring Term - If you don't like reading, you haven't found the right book.

Summer Term - The more you dream, the further you get.

Our curriculum is designed to promote coherence and encourage students to make purposeful connections across different aspects of their learning.

The Focus on Skills

Each term we deliver learning experiences that are based around a central theme. For the Spring Term, 2022 this theme is focused on reading and the quote from J.K Rowling ‘if you don’t like reading you haven’t found the right book’

The themes allow all of the learning to be joined up and for every child to recognise the links between all of their work. Importantly each subject area contributes to the improvements in literacy, numeracy or digital skills.

Discover More

Discover More is the name that we give to ‘homework’ but our way of doing this makes it straight forward for all the children. Each week you will have tasks set from your Mathematics and English teachers. Discover more also creates fortnightly opportunities to learn more about each theme, improve skills and enjoy learning with the family.

Learning beyond the classroom is a very important part of showing a positive attitude and also to appreciate the local area and community in which we live and work.
