Term 1: AllUsion

an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly

An example of an allusion can be found in the Disney movie Hercules. Though not represented in this particular picture, Disney alludes a scene of Hercules training to make viewers recall a moment in The Karate Kid. Because no direct statements are made to bring up The Karate Kid, this is an allusion.

Term 2: comic relief

comic episodes in a dramatic or literary work that offset more serious sections

This is an example of a comic relief because the humorous dialogue contrasts the more serious, dramatic scene taking place.

term 3: Foil character

contrasting characters made in order to highlight particular qualities of the other character

In the movie Inside Out, there are two characters, Sadness and Joy, who have completely opposite personalities. Sadness portrays the feelings of mourning and negativity, while Joy is constantly satisfied and appreciative for the simplicities of life. Therefore, each person's characteristics are enhanced by the others.

Term 4: Monologue

a long speech by one actor in a play or movie, as part of a theatrical or broadcast program

This demonstrates a monologue because the character is giving a lengthy speech to get his point across.

Term 5: Dialogue

conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play, or movie

This scene from the movie Me Before You exhibits dialogue because it shows a conversation occurring between two people.

Term 6: Soliloquy

an act of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers

500 Days of Summer included an example of a soliloquy when Summer's character had a moment to herself and spoke though no one else was listening.

Term 7: tragic hero

a literary character who makes a judgement error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction

The Disney movie The Incredibles shows a perfect example of a tragic hero with Syndrome. He creates a monsterous device that is originally designed to help him execute other superheroes, however it eventually ends up injuring him and helps take part in the process of his death.

Term 8: Oxymoron

rhetorical figure by which contradictory terms are conjoined so as to give point to the statement or expression

This is an example of an oxymoron because the poster advertises The Living Dead, which is ironic because the two terms, "living" and "dead" contrast.

Term 9: Aside

words spoken by an actor to the people watching a play/movie, that the other characters do not hear

This is an example of an aside because in between dialogue, Lizzie McGuire would have brief moments where her character spoke to the audience without anyone else seeing or hearing.

Term 10: Foreshadowing

be a warning or indication of

Before she is fatally shot by a hunter, Bambi's mother gives her a stern lecture on the dangers of man. This foreshadows the death of Bambi's mother.
