First Footprints to give Soul to South Africa's Soil October - november 2019

Learning Academy Worldwide (LAW), the Swedish-based humanitarian support organization spent 8 days, having started on 25 October in the Southern Cape region in South Africa to initiate its Agri-Learn-Earn-Transform project, support 10 schools’ track-and-field sprint athletes in their development and sensitized students, teachers and families to their psychological and mental well-being.

The Agri-Learn-Earn-Transform project served several young people including agri-workers with knowledge and insights into career possibilities within agriculture. Over a 3-day camp at the Herold Meander Protea and Honeybush farm, the young people interacted with agriculture specialists, educators and well-being specialists from Belgium and South Africa. The camp was part of the preparatory phase for participation in a unique vocational training program in agriculture starting 2020.

The farm owner, Mr Theo Adams, who generously availed the space for the training camp, saw the initiative as practical and highlighted the promising possibilities for the young people.

LAW followed up the camp with visits to the homes and communities of the young people who participated in the Agri-Camp. These visits provided insights into how best to provide support for the young people, their families and communities. It also provided LAW with a clearer picture of the realities which the young people faced as part of their daily lives.

Key to the initiative was the knowledge and skill set of Huriqua Pty Ltd, a South African communications and facilitating enterprise under the leadership of Karen Lamberts. Facilitating and leading facilitators to bring meaningful activities into the orbit of the delegates’ experience provided useful connections early on during the program. Enough moments were created at the outset to help for meaningful socialization, personal reflections through creative interactions.
