The man was chopped and buried in an old cemetery. Only his hand came back to life , and La Mano lurks in the darkness under the bed of those children who misbehave, every action has consequences that later come and haunt you.

La Mano Peluda grabs children by the ankle and drag them to unknown places, and the children are never seen again..

The reason why this folktales is passed down from generation to gerneration is to scared children into behaving.

There's even a talk show that became popular due to "La Mano Peluda Legend" & Mexico was the place where this legend arose.
