The evolution of the magnificent Strandbeest By Kate Marchese
Strandbeest have come a long way. They started out as just self-propelled structures that were able to walk by themselves. The Strandbeest is made out of lightweight yellow PVC tubing and spiny white sails. They were created to walk on beaches and have evolved over the years. Every year, the Strandbeest contraptions get more complex every year.
Also, as you know, Strandbeests were created to walk on sand or the beach in open space. But, obviously, beaches have water. I don't think thin wood would work well in water. So, this is why when the Strandbeest nears the water, it stops and turns.
The Strandbeest has sails usually on the side or top of them. This helps them move with the wind. Also, on the bottom of the Strandbeest, they have little pieces of wood that look like feet. These help them walk accurately. These objects are clearly very complex. There are many piece of wood in them that help them walk fluently and smoothly.
On this Strandbeest there is two sails on the front. These look like propellers and they help it move forward. They help it move forward because the air comes in through the back causing it to push forward.
The position, location, and size of the sails determines how the Strandbeest will move. Also, the amount of wind blowing and how fast it's blowing determines how fast and which way the Strandbeest will move.
Once apon a time there was a poor little Strandbeest that just wanted to move on its own without the help of wind. Also, it wanted to be able to fly and be free. Obviously, these tasks are impossible for it to do on its own. So, I added fans or propellers to help it move faster and move up making it fly. The balloons on the Strandbeest help it float up and fly.
