A day in the life... Nursery, autumn term, week 6

I bet many of you wonder what exactly your child's day at school looks like. Read on to gain an insight.

We begin our day with an invitation to play. Everyone arrives at 9am to hang up their coats and greet their friends. We spend a little time settling in, before opening up our zones of play.

A range of opportunities for play and connection.

At ten o'clock we go into our key groups for a snack. We always check how many children we have and how many cups and biscuits we need (practising our counting skills). Then we sing songs and rhymes. Finally, we look at our planning board to talk about what play opportunities there are in each zone and decide where we are going.

Having a chat with our friends.

This week we have had on offer: guided activities on printing and threading skills, learning to use a knife and fork, map skills, sorting shapes, identifying rhymes and observing nature. In our independent play we can chose from play dough, sparkly water, conkers in sand, writing and drawing, role play in the kitchen, climbing, cycling, sea animals, pirate ships and treasure, construction blocks, trains, cars... honestly there is no danger of anyone being bored in Early Years!

Some of our learning through guided activities and play.

At eleven o'clock we come back together in our key groups. We practise our listening and attention by following instructions for building with the Lego. This is also a great time for us to talk about our key vocabulary (colour this week) and rehearse mathematical words like 'behind', 'next', 'three blocks underneath' etc.

Our six bricks challenges this week.

After this, we visit the toilet and wash our hands. Then we re-group to sing number songs (see if your child can remember 'Five little ducks' and 'Five little men in a flying saucer'). We are getting really good at lining up for one of our favourite times of day, lunch!

We know the routines now.

Lunch is followed by a play outside. At 1pm we come together for a story. This week we have loved a wide range of stories but our key texts have been Peace at Last and The Colour Monster.

Once we've talked about the story, it's time for 'scrimbling'. This lays the foundations for writing.

First we dance, then we squiggle!

This takes a lot of concentration, so it's time once again for play! We look at the visual planning board and the children decide where they should go. The photos below show the children engaged in maths and phonics activities in the nursery area.

At the end of the day, a team effort is needed to tidy up. We settle together on the carpet and have our fruit snack before saying goodbye.

I wonder if that helps you see why your child loves nursery so much, and why they are so tired at the end of the day! Huge credit to the children for their enthusiasm, they are a fantastic bunch.
