Newsletter 25th February 2022

Headteacher Comment

This term has started with a proper 'wow'! Lucky Greenfields Year Six children and keen singers were invited to spend the day at the Royal Opera House in London - it's just one of the amazing opportunities that we have from being part of the David Ross Education Trust. Read all about it below.

Also below you'll see all the terrific learning that has been happening across the school. We know that you have missed coming into school and seeing this in person, so please look out for invitations to Parents Evenings this term, and also online Parent Information Evenings with a question and answer session.

Furthermore, please keep an eye out for our new Jigsaw Newsletter that will let you know what is happening for your children's Personal, Social and Health Education across the school. This term we are learning about being healthy in all the ways we can. Because of the importance of supporting our children's health and mental heath, we felt that a dedicated newsletter would help to improve everyone's understanding of this crucial subject, as well as having helpful hints and links for families.

Thank you for your continued support.

New Term, New Skills

A new term has started and Year One are learning some new skills in their first week back, modelling Celtic round houses with clay, mastering number bonds using a clever string trick and expressing themselves with free drawing in coloured sand… can you tell what it is yet?

Wind and Science

Year One kicked off this term being scientists for Wow Day! They explored the new science topic all about materials by testing different materials to see which one would make the best material for a parachute. They made some super predictions and after evaluating their findings decided to use black bin bags to create the parachutes. The children had great fun watching their parachutes blow around the playground in the wind!

Romeo and Juliet

Year Six had an amazing time in London yesterday at the Royal Opera House in the heart of Covent Garden, London. They travelled there to watch a special matinee performance of the ballet 'Romeo and Juliet' by the Royal Ballet for David Ross Education Trust schools. In William’s words:

“ Everyone should see this. It is AMAZING and we are so lucky to get to do this. Ten out of ten.”
Year Six

Life Cycle and Springtime

Reception Wow Day - the children enjoyed learning about the plant life cycle and planting seeds such as asters, nasturtiums and daisies and explored the garden for bugs. We talked about the weather and how things start to grow in the Springtime. We looked at pictures of baby animals which made us really excited to visit the Nevill Holt farm later this term! We then looked closely at some Spring flowers and drew them in detail using watercolour pencils to add some colour.

Nature is springing into life!

Space, the final frontier..... for Year Four

In our usual Greenfields fashion, all children in Year Four have enjoyed participating in a variety of hands-on activities during WOW day. Our main topic this term is all about astronomy. In science, we will be learning all about the Big Bang and the range of planets and stars that can be found in our galaxy, the Milky Way. On WOW day, all children created their own planets out of clay, which they later painted to look like each of the eight planets in our galaxy. In addition, the children were tasked with the challenge of creating a space lander in order to help a group of friendly aliens land on Earth. We will also be learning about the life and career of Neil Armstrong (the first human to walk the moon) in our Talk 4 Reading lessons. As part of this, the children created their own biography bottles, which they can add facts to as the unit progresses.

A massive leap for Year Four

This week, Remarkable Rhinos started their swimming lessons at the Nene Centre in Thrapston. The lessons focus on all levels of swimming, right from the start, with the emphasis on water safety and survival. The children cover all aspects of the National Curriculum Swimming programme, which forms part of their PE entitlement, but mostly we hope that the children develop a lifelong love of swimming and are able to swim for pleasure and exercise too. Older swimmers at Greenfields also have the opportunity to compete against other DRET schools in the annual DRET Summer Cup in Grantham, so we are always on the lookout for swimming talent!

We are lucky to have Kettering's very own swimming pool just a short walk away on London Road. If you fancy swimming, or want to start swimming with your family, you can click on the links below to find out more.

Please follow the link below to complete this short addition relating to online learning with Greenfields Primary School and Nursery.

Class Code and Google Link

These have been updated for the classes in 2021-22, so click on the link for the class you will be in in September.

Teachers are looking forward to posting their ‘Flipping Greenfields’ videos every Friday next term in time for the weekend. Each one is all about next week’s learning, so will get your child prepared for a flying start on Monday. Research shows that children who feel prepared for the coming week are less anxious about school, happier to get up and go on a Monday morning and achieve better than those who are not.
