Hernando de soto Explorer

Hernando De Soto was born in Spain in about 1496. Hernando De Soto was a Spanish soldier and explorer. In 1514 De Soto traveled to the West Indies and Central America. He was looking for treasures of gold, silver and gems. In 1532 he went to South America. In 1537 the king of Spain sent him to North America. Hernando De Soto arrived in Florida in 1539, and traveled through what is now the Southeastern United States. De Soto was very cruel to the Native Americans. In 1541, he and his men crossed the Mississippi River. They were the first Europeans to see it. He died of a disease on May 21, 1542, in what is now Louisiana. His men tossed him into the Mississippi River. His men did not return with gold.
