KEVI Newsletter 2nd December 2022

Senior Leadership Team Update

At KEVI, we are committed to disruption free learning for every student in every lesson. This is our goal so that every single student who attends this school can create a life of their own choosing: choice not chance. We know that some of our rules might, at a surface level, seem unfair. Shouting out an answer or asking for help without putting your hand up are, what we call, sins of enthusiasm. We take these small things seriously because if they were repeated by more students then behaviour in a classroom quickly deteriorates until teachers can’t teach and students can’t learn. We also explain that respect is one of our core values and it is respectful to the teacher and the other students to raise your arm and wait rather than shouting out.

By taking these small things seriously our teachers create classrooms that we are really proud of. Again this week we have had visitors at KEVI who have expressed such surprise at how remarkably well behaved our students are. This does not happen by accident but rather is the result of deliberate work from our teachers to ensure we have disruption free learning. We also have a committed team of support staff who work outside of the classroom to make this happen.

Next week we will be issuing mock results to Year 11 and Year 13 which is a significant milestone in the lead up the real examinations which start in May. All families can expect to receive up-to-date assessment and attitude to learning data in the week commencing 12th December.

Finally, Rowvember has finished and we await the results from across our family of DRET schools. Collectively we rowed 669,234m for KEVI and it is really pleasing to see that over 70% of the school population played a part in this team effort. Let’s see if that is enough to bring home the trophy!

Have a lovely weekend

Values

Year 11 showing Ambition

It has been encouraging to see growing numbers of Year 11 students attend after school period 6 revision classes this week. Year 11 students have just finished a grueling two weeks of mock examinations but have shown that now is not the time for slowing down if they wish to achieve their ambitions. With Christmas on the horizon it is really important we maximise every minute of learning opportunities right until the end of term. We have spoken to Year 11 this week about how, even at this stage, it is not too late to make a huge difference to those final grades which will be awarded in the summer. Choice not chance is our mantra and everyone is still in control of their destiny and ultimately, achieving their ambitions.

Well done Year 11!

Why we do what we do -Academy Rationale

4 HOUSES, 1 COMMUNITY

The House System is a really important feature of King Edward VI Academy. It creates a sense of belonging and pride. It establishes a caring, supportive environment in which each student is a valued member of a small ‘family unit’, the tutor group, within a slightly larger unit, the house, within a larger ‘family’ the whole school.

The House System helps to build an individual’s strengths within a group and create bonds with students of all different ages, which mirrors everyday life.

We promote and provide opportunity for student voice, student responsibility, team building, leadership skills and co-operation.

The house system is underpinned by the academy core values with competitions organised to develop the characters of each individual student.

Whilst we are four houses we are one community creating a school which the students, parents, staff, governors and wider community can be proud of.

Period 6 and Homework Yr11

It is really important that all our year 11 students engage with our intervention sessions, known as period 6, to ensure they achieve or exceed their target grade. In the intervention sessions, staff can focus on gaps in students' knowledge and sort out issues that are preventing them accessing higher grades. We would like to see all year 11 students accessing these classes that occur throughout the week.

Period 6 Revision Classes

Our Period 6 revision classes will run from 3:15pm – 3:50pm. The timetable is as follows:

  • Monday - English / Humanities*
  • Tuesday - No P6
  • Wednesday - Maths/French
  • Thursday - Science/Sport
  • Friday - Humanities*

Please encourage your children to attend. We know that regular attendance at these sessions will boost GCSE results. If transport is a barrier to attendance please contact the school office or ask your child to speak to their form tutor.

Homework

All students in Year 11 have homework which they should be doing every evening. As a minimum they should be completing self quizzing every evening using knowledge organisers on the following rotation:

  • Monday - English Literature
  • Tuesday - Maths
  • Wednesday - Science
  • Thursday - English Language
  • Friday - Option 1 & 2
  • Weekend -Options 3 & 4

Further information about homework, including guidance with how to support self-quizzing revision can be found here: King Edward VI Academy - Homework (kingedwardacademy.co.uk).

Self-quizzing is the most effective form of revision.

House News

House Motto

Last week each house made a motto which students had created. We are excited to reveal the new house mottos.

  • Apollo’s House motto is, ‘Courage conquers fear’.
  • Arete’s House motto is ‘Striving for excellence’.
  • Mercury’s House motto is ‘Forging a path to success’.
  • Minerva’s House motto is ‘Victory through wisdom’.

Currently the scores on the doors are, Minerva in 4th with 775 points. Apollo in 3rd place with 905 points. Mercury in 2nd with 955 points and Arete in 1st place with 995 points! This could all change once the House Portrait results and House Rowing results are revealed.

This week we were all really excited to see the house logos, big and bold, on a wall wrap when you walk into the academy. The wrap features some quotations and our academy values, for us to reflect on, as well as the house names and logos.

All the logos feature wings and Mrs Jones, Executive Principal, talked about the power of team work and used a story from football and Manchester United, that Sir Alex Ferguson had shared with his players, in assembly this week.

There is all to play for in House Dodgeball next week. Followed by the Santa Fun Run the week after.

Thinking Ahead – My Future, My Choice

Attention Year 8 & Year 9!

  • What are your future plans & career possibilities?
  • What plans to do you have after you have completed your GCSEs?
  • Do you plan to go on to further/higher education? If so what courses might you study?
  • What career ideas do you have for the future at the moment?

In year 7, 8 and 9 you will be learning new skills and knowledge that will give you the confidence to help you plan your next steps. This process starts with your careers education in school which will encourage you to think about your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes. You will also start to make some important decisions that could influence your future career path as you will be choosing your subjects to study for GCSE. This process will begin for all Year 9 students early next year.

Each week we will show you examples of the various careers linked to the subject you are studying. This week’s career idea is ........

Attendance

Attendance last week was 89.9% so has dropped from the previous two weeks.

We appreciate that there is an increase in colds and viruses at this time of year but please ensure that your child is only absent if they are too ill to attend school and make sure that your child returns to school as soon as they are well enough as every school day counts!

Well done to Year 7 with an impressive week at 93.2%.

House attendance

If you would like to discuss your child’s attendance or need any support with attendance then please contact Mrs Kwee or Mrs Ziller on 01790 753260 or tkwee@kingedwardacademy.co.uk to discuss ways to support your child's attendance.

Table Talk

Helping our students develop their moral compass is an important part of our character education. We speak with our students regularly about using their moral compass. We would love you to discuss over the dinner table what you think a moral compass is and how you use it to guide your decisions.

Teen Support

We know that you, as caregivers, want to help your teens learn about digital safety so they can manage their online presence, both now and as they grow into adulthood. This Guardian’s Guide is designed to provide an overview of TikTok and the many tools and controls built into the product to keep everyone safe. The guide also provides general information on common internet safety concerns.

Reviewing this guide, Youth Portal, and Community Guidelines with your teen can help your family establish ongoing dialogue about safety in our digital world. Hosting candid family conversations about the ways in which your teen engages online, including and beyond TikTok, will help bolster their sense of digital citizenship and empower them to be mindful of their own safety on the internet.

Word of the Week

Diabolical

Diabolical: adjective – being devil-like or exceptionally bad or unpleasant

  • Word origin: diabolus (Latin): the devil
  • His selfishness was utterly diabolical and hurt everyone.
  • Diabolically: adverb. Behaving in a diabolical way.
  • When faced with the chance to ruin her sister’s birthday, she behaved diabolically and chose to wreck the party.

Times Tables

Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their times tables to help embed them in their long term memory.

At the end of each lesson, they will stand behind their chairs in silence, preparing for themselves for the next lesson and just before they leave the whole class will chant the timetables assigned for that week.

Week commencing 5th December - we will be chanting our 8 times table

Accelerated Reader

KEVI20 WC 05.12.2022 Period 3

It is fantastic to see so many students visiting the library and enjoying the new stock that Miss Villiers is working hard to put out onto the shelves. More and more students are choosing to discover the up-to-date new books in stock and are so absorbed in their KEVI 20 reading time in lessons, they are reluctant to stop reading! Mr Wilkinson was proud to show off KEVI 20 in action earlier this week while he escorted visitors on a tour of the school saying, "KEVI 20 is one of my favourite moments in the Academy day. It's wonderful to see students so focussed on their reading and that they are clearly enjoying their books."

Next week, all Key Stage 3 students will have the opportunity to see if their reading efforts have brought about progress: Year 7, 8 and 9 students will all take a second Star Reading Test in the IT rooms. We are looking forward to seeing an improvement in reading ages. All students will be informed of their new reading age in the English lesson which follows their Star Test and will share their news with their parents.

The Library is open at 8:30am, breaktime and lunchtime every day.

Ms K Davis - Head of English Department

Sports News

This week has been a busy week at KEVI with Rowvember coming to its end, it was brilliant to see so many pupils participate in the event and contribute towards their house totals and the school total. We have seen some amazing rowing performances throughout the month, and everyone should be proud of how they did.

This week also saw KEVI attend the DRET Rowing Cup in Grantham. All our selected pupils represented the school so well and gave it everything when competing against the other schools. Overall, it was a successful day with several of our rowers finishing in the top 10 of their year groups.

Alongside rowing we had two fixtures this week, our girls travelled to Skegness Grammar to play hockey and our Y7 & Y9 boys travelled to TMA to play indoor football. All four teams showed real ambition and courage in their fixtures and represented the school brilliantly. The stand our result was the Y7 boys who won 8-5 in a highly entertaining game.
