HISTORY
The backbone of Amnesty International was formed in 1961, when an article titled "The Forgotten Prisoners" was published by British Lawyer Peter Beneson on the topic of two Portuguese students who had been imprisoned simply for raising a toast to freedom. The article urges people around the world to send out letters devoted to advocating for people who were being unjustly treated for expressing their freedom, and the response to this article's publication was so great that eventually, Amnesty International was born as a collective.
"Amnesty International adopted me as a prisoner of conscience, and that led to my - it touched me in a way that really led to me opening up my heart, I've called it the re-humanisation process."
- Maajid Nawaz
