St Mary's College Newsletter Term 2, Edition 2

Message from the Principal

Ngaji gurrjin! It has been a fabulous Term Two this far. We can now enjoy some events and activities which are once more allowed with the relaxing of some COVID measures. We continue to be grateful for our College community for being so supportive and adaptive, as we navigate these changes and re-adjust plans for the remainder of our 2022 to ensure the very best opportunities for all of our students and families.

As you will see in this edition of our newsletter, we have a great deal to celebrate and be thankful for. We are so proud of all the efforts of our students and staff, along with the contributions of our families and community that we are able to share with you all. You notice that we have increased our sharing of ‘College happenings’ on our Facebook page to engage families and our community, we trust you have been enjoying these photos and updates.

There is a great deal planned, and for us to prepare for in coming weeks as we race to the end of Semester One. Reports will be accessible next week for our Senior Secondary students, and for our PP-10 students in Week Ten of this term. Please remember to stay in contact with our staff about your children as you are extremely valuable and important to your child’s education. We want to work in partnership with you to ensure the very best for each and every one of our students.

Thanks as always for your support and for working with us to achieve the very best for each and every one of our students.

Year One Birrabirrga - PBS

Our amazing Year 1 Birrgabirrga students have been very responsible in Sport, almost always bringing their hats and water to each lesson! Even with the weather cooling down, it is important to protect ourselves from the sun and to stay hydrated as we run around!

We had a big focus on using kind words during our Sport classes. Sport is a time to play with our friends and learn new skills. It has been great seeing them lead the way through their kind and respectful behaviour and their abilities to work so well in partners and in teams!

Here are some of our Birrgabirrga students after a great lesson throwing and catching with bean bags and beginning to use footies!

Science with Mr Jake

Year 3 and Year 5 students are both studying Astronomy this term. Mr. Jake thought it would be lovely to see the stars and planets - but during the day. How? You say. Well, the Science Room was converted into a planetarium, and we travelled through the cosmos via the spaceship – The Imagination.

Year 6 Mass

Our Year 6 Jiribuga and Gulamana class came together at the Nulungu Chapel to celebrate Mass led by Father Patricio. We enjoyed hearing the readings and gospel about stewardship and caring for God's creation.

Year 6 - PBS

The Year 6 students recently earned their PBS and CSL excursion to Gantheaume Point. Students have been learning all about Laudato Si and stewardship. The Year 6 students travelled by bus to Gantheaume Point where they had a picnic lunch, cleaned up the natural environment and then were able to have a swim and enjoy some beach cricket. All the students and teachers had a gorgeous time! We can't wait to reach our Dojo Goals so we can do it all again soon!

PBS Kindness Afternoon at Primary

On Thursday the primary campus took part in a PBS Kindness Afternoon. It was such a nice way to end our 4 day learning week and remind us of how important it is to be kind to our friends, family and teachers. Here are some pictures of what some of the classes got up to.

SMC Feast Day

Our Mass for our College Feast Day began with a traditional procession of Mary carried by some of our College SRC. The Kindy students were so wonderful in presenting flowers and crowning Mary before the Mass started. Bishop Michael Morrissey came to celebrate the Whole College Mass with us for the first time this year. Bishop Michael shared with us some thoughts about who Mary was and the role she plays in protecting us as our Patron. Thanks must go to our wonderful choir, readers, and musicians in their help to create such a wonderful liturgy for our students, which began our College Feast Day celebrations.

Barbier Mass

Barbier House celebrated their Feast Day on the 17th of May. Students started the morning by celebrating Mass and then enjoyed a Subway lunch. It was a great day for all Barbier students and teachers to celebrate their Feast Day.

House Cross Country

The House Cross Country event was run on Friday of Week 2 this term. With the return of the dry season and some cooler wind and temperatures, it was a great day for students to show their skills on the course. A couple of challenges this year with COVID reducing numbers and building works altering the course to the outside of the school, the students adapted well. Year groups ran at different periods, making sure the course wasn’t too congested and allowing for faster times. Presentations were held at the end of the day to celebrate the achievements in front of the whole school, something that had not been done for a while in these times.

I would like to give a huge thanks to the HPE department for all their hard work behind the scenes in setting up the carnival and especially Miss Brooke for running the carnival on the day, it could not have been such a huge success without these staff.

Below is a list of the winners for each year group. A huge congratulations to Rice House for taking out the overall champion house.

Interschool Cross Country

With COVID-19 restrictions lifted, the Interschool Cross Country was back on this year. On Thursday 19th May. St Mary’s once again held the event, welcoming Derby SHS and Broome SHS for a day of healthy competition. With the weather still a bit warm, it was a tough day for competitors on the course, but there were many great runs by students throughout the day. It was close all day between Broome SHS and St Mary’s, but Broome SHS just came away with the win. We had some very pleasing results from the students below:

U/13 Male 1st – James Mitchell 2nd

SMC U/14 Male 1st – Luca Scriva

U/15 Female 2nd – Menrietta Ningella

OPEN Female 2nd – Georgia Bennett

Year 8 Aces

This week the Year 8 ACES were lucky enough to have a visit from an accomplished author and illustrator Kerry Anne Jordinson, who has lived in Broome for the last 20 years. Kerry Anne spoke to the students about how she set up her business and how she learnt how to illustrate. She also discussed a few simple techniques on how to use colour and shading for effects in her illustrations and some tips for writing children’s books. It was a fun session!

On behalf of St Mary’s College, we would like to thank Kerry Anne for volunteering her time to come and talk to the students. If you would like to look at more of her work, check out her Facebook page or you can see her at the Courthouse Markets.

Year 8 & 9 Social Night

At the end of Term 1, the Year 8 and Year 9 students were fortunate to be able to participate in their year level socials. The students had the opportunity to give suggestions for what they would like to do, and Laser Tag was the winner for both year levels. Both evenings ran smoothly, and the students were all on their best behaviour. The students were able to participate in one and half hours of laser tag and then finish off the evening with pizza and a drink.

Year 12 ATAR Biology

Year 12 ATAR Biology students completed an investigation using gel electrophoresis. Here are the three students loading and running their gel.

We used the process to separate dyes, the purple and black dyes you can clearly see at the start have separated out as the red colour molecules are smaller and can move through the gel medium more quickly

Rice House Feast Day

On May the 5th, Rice House gathered together to focus and reflect upon the person of Blessed Edmund Rice. His feast day is a time to celebrate the wealth of selflessness that he possessed and passed on to those he came into contact with. On this day we celebrate his life, love, Spirituality and Charism. We give thanks for his vision and mission, the raising up of the poor and the oppressed to be pillars of Christ's presence in our world, a system of education and a network of schools where the student is at the heart of the process and Gospel values permeate the entire school community.

ASPIRE

Aspire from UWA came up to visit our Year 10s a couple of weeks ago. They did a workshop called Unidiscovery with our students. The team started out with a short question and answer about University, the different ways they can get there, and then went on to talk about all of the different courses or subjects that are offered in Year 11 and 12, including VET and general. They finished the session off looking at how the ATAR is calculated and another short question and answer opportunity. Aspire also spent lunchtime talking to any other interested student in the Library about University.

Year 10 Outdoor Education

"Although the wet and cold weather on Monday morning the year 10 Outdoor Education Class went on their Kayaking and fishing expedition at Barn Hill. The weather predictions were not in our favour however the camp still went ahead and thank goodness it did.

After our 2-hour bus ride we got to Barn Hill and were lucky enough to be given 2 huts to sleep in, as tents were not looking like the best option with the weather forecast. After lunch we headed down to the beach with the new kayaks, luckily there was a small break in the weather. Most of the class had not paddled before so many new skills were learnt. We parked up on a beach down the coast and had a fish and swim. It was great feedback to hear that the highlight of the camp for the students was the kayaking.

We spent the afternoon fishing with our very own fishing competition. Mr Steve and Lachlan both caught themselves a Golden Trevally which they later filleted and cooked up for the class as a pre-dinner snack. The rest of the evening was spent cooking, debriefing, playing cards and telling stories.

A massive Thankyou to Mr Steve and Mr Cam for all their help on camp it could not have gone ahead without you both. Another big Thankyou to the students, who should be so proud of their efforts and behaviour throughout the entire camp."

Biggest Morning Tea

During Week 8 the Food Technology students successfully hosted a Biggest Morning Tea. The bake sale was to raise money for the Cancer Council. In the weeks leading up to the event, students from Year 7 to 12 cooked a range of savoury and sweet dishes to sell on the day to their peers and teachers. Along with the bake sale a raffle was held and we kindly thank Miss Shannon from Teacher Baker Creator and the Broome Boulevard Café for their donations. Overall the students raised $1016! A fantastic effort! Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the event and to Miss George and the teachers for their sales assistance!
