In Year 3, we use a variety of texts of different genres as the basis of our creative and comprehension work based on CLPE The Power of Reading and The Literacy Tree. These encourage the children to be confident speakers and to be enthusiastic and creative writers. In Prep 3 the focus is on encouraging pupils to take more responsibility and independence when expressing their ideas in writing.

As the pupils start life in the Middle School, they will begin to look in more detail at the natural world, carrying out formal investigations and exploring the wider solar system and beyond. This will be the first year of the 11+ syllabus, giving them a solid grounding in science for years to come.
Michaelmas Term
- Rocks and Soils: An introduction to geology; identifying rocks, minerals and soils and methods of separation. Fossil formation will also be studied.
- Forces and Magnets: Looking at that forces can push and pull on an object; the forces of attraction and repulsion between magnets; friction including air resistance.
Lent Term
- Parts of the body and nutrition: Looking at major organs, the role of nutrition and diseases caused by poor nutrition.
- The Skeleton and Movement: The structure and function of animal skeletons and the role in movement.
Trinity Term

Modern Foreign Languages

As the pupils in Prep 3 begin their journey through the Prep School, we aim to continue making lessons fun and engaging and to start developing the skills necessary to ensure progress in the four key skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The focus at this stage is to instil a sense of enjoyment when learning languages and to develop their curiosity about the many cultures of the World. ‘Having a go’ and participation is essential in every area of learning, but even more so in MFL, and therefore we will be using a variety of strategies to ensure this takes place in a low-pressure way. The focus on phonics will begin their journey to becoming independent language learners. Independence will be encouraged through use of Sentence Builders and the Conti approach to language learning.
In Prep 3 the focus is on French, with taster weeks of Spanish and Italian.

Michaelmas Term
- Feeling the beat: pupils explore the effect of a strong beat in music and respond appropriately. Through a variety of singing, percussion and movement activities they develop their understanding of the beat and the impact that the speed of the beat has on music.
- Exploring percussion: the children explore the concept of timbre. They represent a variety of percussion sounds on paper and go on to create compositions that involve a variety of timbres.
- Listening and Appraising: listening to, discussing and moving to a variety of musical extracts.
- Christmas music: learning songs for the Christmas events.
Lent Term
- Sound, sign, and symbol: the children read and interpret graphic scores using body percussion and classroom instruments.
- Dynamics and silence: through games, songs and instrumental work, the children’s understanding of the musical elements of dynamics and silence are developed.
- Listening/composing/appraising: a variety of themes and moods are used as a basis for group composition activities.

In the Michaelmas Term, the children will complete the following topics. This will include:
Tennis: learning how to strike the ball using forehand and backhand. Improving individual racket and ball control. Developing underarm serves and rallying.

Boys – Rugby. Developing of handling skills, evasive running and attacking running lines & defending ‘in-line’. Development of ‘Tag’ Rugby knowledge. Football - Developing knowledge of the game. Tackling, building up practices taught to enhance passing, control.

Lent Term
In the Lent Term, the children will complete the following topics. This will include:
Basketball: Intro to the game. Learning to dribble, movement around the court with/out the ball, types of pass, & the rules.
Gymnastics: Reinforce sequencing and individual movements. Rolls, jumping, balances and improve technical knowledge of performing weight bearing exercises. Pair work, use of apparatus and sequence development.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE)
We use Jigsaw Programme, which holds children at its heart and aims to equip them for happy, healthy lives and to be effective learners. It is sequential and contains six puzzles (units):
