The “Inside on the Outside Series” considers freedom and imprisonment, interpreting internal and external views of prison structures—including cracks, windows, gates, walls, cells, passageways, towers, and yards. The works aim to navigate the visual and physical inaccessibility of these obstructing, webbed layers, suggesting a centering within and a freedom beyond incarceration. This series is informed by Giannell’s experience as the inaugural Artist in Residence with the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project in 2019 teaching and collaborating with incarcerated individuals inside of two men’s medium-security prisons.
