The Bark february 2018 - Issue 12

Wow those holidays went by so fast! It's hard to believe that it's already Week 3 of school. My children have settled in pretty easily and I hope its been the same for all the children. Even my little Preppie has had a relatively smooth transition, and I know that's thanks to the loving and happy environment that she has been welcomed into by Wendy and Ian, in particular, but all the staff and students of Candlebark. Good luck to all the Preps and new students this year.

Here's to a super exciting, adventure full, year ahead!!

If you have anything you would like to contribute to future issues of 'The Bark' please feel free to email me; janeduggan26@yahoo.com.au

Welcome Back!

Hi everyone,

In our third week, the indications are good, and we feel we're in for a bottler of a year. The kids have settled in really quickly, including the new ones, and the Preps are as confident and cheerful as any group of Preps we've had. The weather continues to be baffling, with some violent electrical storms, and a cooler day at Lancefield Pool than we were expecting – but that didn't seem to bother the kids :-)

The good news is that we haven't yet had a Total Fire Ban Day this term and we are about halfway through the last month of summer!

Our first "educational" outing is on Thursday, with the year sevens going to the National Theatre production (from London) of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ at the Arts Centre in Melbourne. The book from which it is adapted is a famous one, and a riveting one, and the theatre performance has been lavished with praise by reviewers, so we are expecting a pretty sensational afternoon.

Those of you who know and appreciate Fitzroy Community School would have enjoyed the article about Principal Tim Berryman in last week's Age. Tim was talking about the importance of encouraging resilience and independence in young people, so that they are more likely to become confident, successful adults. He was however contradicted in the article by a lecturer in education from Queensland, who explained that children should not walk to school on their own, because they sometimes forget how to get there…!

Maybe that explains the mystery surrounding the school picnic at Hanging Rock.

This link will take you to a good interview with Tim on the TV program The Project, which followed on from the article in The Age. https://tenplay.com.au/channel-ten/the-project/extra/season-9/kids-off-the-leash

Looking forward to the rest of the term – it's a short term, so we need to make the most of it!

John

Baby News

Congratulations to Jess and her partner Steve on the happy & safe arrival of their new baby boy, Reuben (love his name!).

School Camps

There are two school camps in Term 1, which will between them involve all students from Prep to Grade 6. Each camp will run for 4 days and 3 nights, and we are going to a camping site we love, at Bright. The dates are as follows:

March 13-16: Wendy's prep class, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 5

March 20-23: Ian's prep class, Grade 1, Grade 4, Grade 6

More details will be provided closer to the dates.

Pastoral Care

Each year various teachers take on responsibility for different classes – a pastoral care role. What it means in practice is that queries to John about academic or social matters will be referred by John to the relevant teacher or teachers, so it will be easier and more efficient if the parents contact them directly rather than contacting John.
