Update | January 2023

Welcome to our first Institute Update 2023. In this edition we proudly announce our brand new European projects UP2030 (Urban Planning and design ready for 2030) and DUST (Democratising jUst Sustainability Transitions). We are also happy to share that the Institute was selected for two new European research projects starting mid 2023. Our training on sustainable urban planning and development is taking shape - we will soon invite the selected lecturers to join the process. Looking forward to a successful 2023 together!

Institute Activities

+CityxChange

Trondheim has established two Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) using an Energy and Flexibility Market - an innovative and unique solution! The market interacts with the ordinary power market and ensures better utilisation of energy and power. We hope the solution will be replicable on a large scale.

VARCITIES

This year, VARCITIES will be going full steam ahead with the implementation phase: Pilot Cities are now starting to work to make their Visionary Solutions reality. Head to our updated Pilots pages to discover more about each Pilot and its Visionary Solutions!

JUSTNature

π–π‘πšπ 𝐰𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩π₯𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐! This month, we look back at the moments that sparked our collective joy and achievement through the recap from myriad project activities and our City Practice Labs highlighted stories. The Institute had supported project's partners with dissemination materials and organise one special session in the 58th ISOCARP WPC. The next project meeting is 6-9 March in Szombathely, Hungary.

DUSTΒ & UP2030

In about just three weeks, two of our new European funded research projects will start! DUST will look into just transitions in several regions that are highly dependent on fossil fuels, while UP2030 will support the development of local adaptation strategies. Stay tuned to discover more about these new projects when they launch!

Capacity-Building Program Sustainable Urban Planning and Development

Training on Sustainable Urban Planning and Development

A new training program as a result of collaboration initiative between our partners in South-East Asia and the Institute. This new program includes a series of 3 modules targeting professionals working in the city-making disciplines – mainly in ASEAN countries. The overall goal is to deepen the capacity of city-makers, improving decision making and the implementation of projects at the local, regional and national level. The training will focus on three primary themes (Urban Governance, Urban Environment, Strategic Planning) and localise the application in the ASEAN context.

The developed materials consist of case studies and best practices, videos, further readings and references to other interactive media. Additional to the overall themes, current global planning concepts and approaches are covered. These topics will be complemented with viable approaches and tools, such as vision building, action planning, monitoring and assessment approaches, digital tools and tackle the question of what is suitable planning and which elements have to be considered in various contexts.

The call for lecturers is now closed and we are evaluating the candidates. A first information session with the selected candidates will take place early February 2023.

Call for external services

For a new project starting early 2023, the Institute is looking for external web designing services. This would include setting up a project website and designing "story-telling modules". Visit our website to know more about this opportunity.

Call for collaboration

The Institute is looking for potential partner organisations to develop together project proposals for the new Horizon Europe 2023 calls. We are particularly looking at topics under Cluster 5 and Cluster 6. Are you also interested in Horizon Europe new calls? Reach out to us and let's explore project ideas!
