Cate W. Art 1 Portfolio/winter 2022/Strath Haven H.s.

The objective of this project was to either create three Zentangles that related to one another, or to create a grid study of on large image, both using the concepts of watercolor paints. For my Zentangles, I chose to have mine depict my cat sitting in a tree the way we would find her when she was still super energetic. While creating this project, I learned the most efficient and not efficient ways to use watercolor paints and which methods worked better in certain areas of space. I also learned how useful micron pens are when it comes to painting over them with watercolor paints along with all the tiny details I was able to draw. During the process of creating this project, I absolutely loved using the micron pens to create that level of detail in addition to using watercolor pencils for the vibrant warm colors. For the finished product, I was a bit disappointed about how the cool color background turned out, but I love my choice in the types of colors used for the specific patterns :).
The objective of this project was to create a shattered value drawing that incorporated the ideas of contour lines, 10 shades of value, and contrasting the different shades with one another so that no two shades next to each other are the same. While creating this drawing, I learned about the different types of shading pencils and how to use them to work to my advantage. Additionally, I also learned how smudged work can get with these types of pencils and how to properly erase these smudges- I'm a lefty so it was kind of tough:)! The process of this project was, I will admit, a bit tedious because of how large this drawing had to be and how apparent the 10 values had to be. It was also a bit tricky with the different values coinciding with the plants, but the finished product was worth it. For the finished product, I'm really happy about how it turned out because I was a little nervous while working on it that the values would be too light, however when I took a step back I was and still am really relieved and happy about how this project turned out.
The objective of this project was to create an eight different pattern variety of our names through the use of different markers and sharpies. Personally, this project was my favorite because I loved incorporating all these different patterns that I identify with and it was just so much fun creating this. While creating this project, I learned various techniques and different ways to use sharpies that I've honestly never thought to use. During the process of creating this project, it was a bit hard to think of patterns to create towards the end, but I found myself enjoying different discoveries on ways to make these patterns really stand out and fit the main idea of each square., especially my personal favorite the top second square with the extremely "fishy" background to fit the dragon eating the fish to create an A. After finishing the project, I was and still am extremely proud of how it turned out and how every one of those squares related to my life and identity :).
The art above are from a couple other projects, a favorite sketchbook assignment of mine, and one of my favorite, quick drawings I have done in my sketchbook. This class was most definitely one of my favorite classes of the semester and easily the biggest stress reliever in my life since school started. Throughout this class, I've pushed myself to infinity and beyond in terms of skills and have learned new artistic techniques I would have never thought to try. I will say that there were definitely some projects more difficult than others, like working with acrylic paint at the very end of the semester. This skill was especially hard for me because I'm more of a pencil pen watercolor pencil type of girl. In other words, an artist who loves being in control. However, using acrylic paints really made me step outside my comfort zone, and the results were more than pleasing. I'm so glad I took this class because every part of it was enjoyable and just fun, so much fun.
