About Terry Marsh
Dr. Willie Terry Marsh is an assistant professor in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Norfolk State University. Originally from Norfolk, Virginia, he earned a BS in Mass Communication and an MA in Media and Communication, both from Norfolk State University. He also obtained a doctorate in Communication, Culture, and Media Studies from the Cathy Hughes School of Communication at Howard University. His professional background includes working with CBS/Viacom, where his experience included media sales, audio/video production, voice-over, and public/community relations. He has also worked as a public affairs liaison with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and as a tour publicist with Rowe Entertainment Group (Atlanta, GA), a national concert production company, where he strategized media campaigns for national recording artists and events.
He is a veteran of the United States Army, where he served as a military journalist, photojournalist, and broadcaster. As an educator, Dr. Marsh has taught classes in audio/video production, Internet/web design, media criticism, digital photography, business communication, interpersonal communication, and principles of speech. His research interests include media diversity (with emphasis on African American representation in media), social media, educational technologies, and intercultural communication. He has a strong interest in African American media ownership issues and in the fair representation of women and minorities in media content. He believes that a diverse media environment promotes greater intercultural understanding.
“If people in the media cannot decide whether they are in the business of reporting news or manufacturing propaganda, it is all the more important that the public understandx that difference and chooses their news sources accordingly” (Thomas Sowell).
My teaching has been inspired by professional experience and research-based teaching practices . I stay current in my knowledge about new media practices and technologies by tapping into a network of practicing media industry professionals, attending conferences, and membership in professional organizations. I often invite recent graduates and working professionals into the classroom to offer insights into industry practices and to identify how classroom teaching and assignments prepare students to succeed.
