Jingi Walla - Welcome!

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung nation. We are grateful for the winding creek - Balun - and the Bangalow Palm trees, that are not just pretty but also a source of food, water and materials for the Arakwal people. We are thankful we can learn whilst we play on this land. We respect and love our Jugan - land. We treat all elders with jarima (pronounced Garima) - respect. We will take action to protect, unite and connect with Country.

Education Week | Creating Futures - education changes lives

This week we are celebrating Education Week, an annual celebration of NSW public education and the achievements of our schools, staff, students and communities. The theme this year is ‘Creating futures – education changes lives’, and we are celebrating the journey students and learners take throughout the NSW Education system, focusing on how we are creating futures for our students, staff and families.

We celebrate all types of learning that occurs at all levels across our education system. We have a shared responsibility to help shape the lives and create the future of today’s learners.

I would like to acknowledge our teachers’ and support staff’s dedication and commitment to student learning and wellbeing, both in the classroom, and also through the many varied experiences that our staff facilitate for our students, to ensure a rich educational experience. I would also like to thank our parent community for the wonderful assistance we receive in support of our endeavours. Our Bangalow Public School community is a wonderful place to be!

Build Update

The site establishment for our build has occurred, and we have commenced our new procedures for recess play at the showground. So far all appears to be going smoothly. I want to commend our students and staff on transitioning to our reduced space and new procedures and play area so seamlessly, and thank them all for their understanding during the next couple of weeks of noise, as our excavation and demolition works take place. I am informed that the worst of the noise should be this initial period, and after this it will be a lot quieter.

Bangalow Music Festival Schools Concert

Our students in Stage 2 and 3 have been fortunate enough to be invited to attend the Southern Cross Soloists’ schools concert, ‘Maps and journeys: The world’s first astronomers’. The concert is next Thursday at the A&I hall. A big thank you to the Southern Cross Soloists for inviting us free of charge, due to a grant they have received. We are looking forward to an enriching experience.

Finally I wish good luck to all of our students who are representing Bangalow PS at the Headlands District Athletics Carnival tomorrow. I know you will do your best and represent yourself and our school with pride.

Have a wonderful week.

Carol

class of the week - boon-inge (4/5ph)

Jingi Walla! Welcome to our class family of Boon-inge!

In history we have been studying Australia - both pre and post colonisation. The students are writing journals from the perspective of convict children being sent from England to colonial Australia or indigenous children facing the prospect of colonisation.

January 26th 1820

My name is Jess. The year is 1820 and I am eight years old. I live in London and my life has not been the best. Today is my brother’s birthday and I’m gonna get him some shoes because me and my brother are going to run away from home and sail away to Australia. We can’t do that without shoes.

January 27th 1820

So my brother’s birthday was a mess. When I tried to steal the shoes the shop owner caught me red handed and he said for payment I had to work 29 hours a week. As for my bother’s present I made him a map of where we were gonna travel to in Australia.

Hi my name is Joly and I’m an orphan. My mum and dad were killed by a criminal. So that was five years ago. Finally, it was the night to escape the orphanage. I jumped through the door and grabbed a gun and ran far far away. I found an apple tree. I was so happy. I was so hungry. Yuuuuuum. It was so good. I picked ten apples and kept running.

~ Louis

Back before 1788 I had a wonderful life being one of five. I had a big family. Mulania, my little sister, Araka, my little brother, Mini May, the oldest of us all, Bruno Bumer, my big brother and then me, Louie. I’m ten and I’m a bit of a stealer. One day I heard a metallic scream echo through the forest. The birds squawked as they flew for their lives. I caught sight of a boat in the distance, I had no idea why it was there. Suddenly a cold wet hand grabbed me and everything went black. I woke up in fear. I was chained to a pole. There was no way out. There was screaming. I look around to see thousands of other kids. ‘Help!’ one of them screamed as a tall figure tackled her up the stairs. I gasped as a musty old taste blew through the cabin. I caught a glimpse of light in the corner of my eye, it was a window. I was on a boat!

~ Flynn

7th November 1786

My name is Nancy Mayheel. I looked like a cute, little, innocent four-year-old but I was more than that. I stole things. At age six I stole two bread sticks, a silk coat, an old mouldy shirt, some oversized pants and a black gun. At age eight I stole a grenade, an oversized nightgown, a pair of leather clogs and a leather blouse. Now I’m ten I’m much better at stealing things I thought but yesterday was the day I got caught. They have taken me to a place, a place I’ve never been before. A place that in my gut I know I should never be. The smell of old, mouldy fish and the screams of children. I see my biggest fear.

~ Chilli

I’m Ryan and I’m 19 years old. I’m laying down in a boat getting sent to Australia. So how did I get here. It was a Saturday morning, I jumped out of the damp hammock I was sleeping in. I ran quickly to the markets, lit a stick on fire chucked it at a nearby apple cart. The guard ran to help while I grabbed some bread, money, pistol and ammo. Then I jumped on a horse and I galloped off. The horse twisted it’s ankle in a crack in the road. I fell off. I limp away but heard gun shots.

~ Ben

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

In 4/5PH we have a Student of the Week each week. The person is celebrated for their unique qualities and achievements. They are responsible for doing all the stuff that needs to be done to help Mrs Plooy and Mrs Hughes. They are invaluable. The pictures are the gallery of some of our Students of the Week this year.

premier's spelling bee

Last Thursday, our students in Years 3-6 battled it out in our school hall in our Junior and Senior school finals for the annual Premier’s Spelling Bee.

It was an exciting competition and students challenged each other through elimination rounds up the highest word levels of the competition. Words like ‘discrepancy’, ‘jewellery’ and ‘instantaneous’ were some of those students grappled with. As always, the final determination for the division champions was a nail biter.

Congratulations to Charlie D our Junior Champion and Frida G our Junior Runner Up, and to Ryder G our Senior Champion and Julian H our Senior Runner Up. Our school champions will progress to regional finals later this term where they will represent our school.

Well done to all the students who were adventurous and took on this challenge to apply their literacy skills in front of a large audience in a competitive situation. All our students did an amazing job!

Thank you to those parents who attended our school finals and provided great feedback about their enjoyment for this academic opportunity for our students.

Until next year!

Quiet Activity Club in the Library

This week we commenced our new playground arrangements as the site for the new build was established. This involves all students heading over to the lower showground area each recess. At lunchtimes we all share the hard surface play areas on site to allow for extra curricular clubs and programs to run as well as access the canteen.

To assist in providing students with additional options, on Wednesdays and Fridays at lunchtimes, students can choose to come to the library for ‘Quiet Activity Club’. Our wonderful new learning space allows 40 students to engage in more passive play and leisure activities including reading, drawing, puzzles and board games. We look forward to including indigenous weaving into the activities in the coming weeks. Students did a brilliant job of displaying safe, respectful, learner behaviours in our library during Wednesday’s session and left our library tidy and ready for classes to use.

100 days of learning

This week Kindergarten celebrated 100 days of school. While we might have looked like we were 100 years old, the goal of celebrating 100 days of school is to reinforce reading, writing, and, most importantly, math skills they have learned. Students worked on counting large collections of 100 items. We also reflected on how much students have already learnt in the first 100 days of school and some of the skills we haven't learnt...yet!

Sending an absence notification to school?

When your child is absent from school, please advise us of the reason as soon as possible. You can do this with a simple phone call to the office, or by completing an Absentee Form in the School Stream app. If you are reporting the absence electronically, or responding to our automated SMS (which is sent out at 11am each day to parents of students who are absent without an explanation), please be sure to leave a detailed reason. If your child is unwell, please provide some further information so we don' t have to follow up with another phone call (e.g. "cold/flu", "headache", "tummy bug", etc).

What is Fairtrade Fortnight?

Each year Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand designates a fortnight when people come together to support farmers and workers around the world by highlighting and purchasing Fairtrade products. It’s a chance to stand up for what you believe in – whether that’s protecting the environment, gender equality, or ensuring that farmers and workers are paid fairly. This year Fair Trade fortnight runs from the 3rd-16th August.

We all make choices about how to spend our money. Every time we go to the shops or decide what to do at the weekend, we’re choosing what’s important to us and our families.

Farmers in developing countries make choices too, but when they’re paid low prices, their options become limited. For those farmers, the choice might be between having enough food for all the family to eat a proper dinner or planting trees to shelter their crops from the hazards of climate change.

For Fairtrade farmers, fair pay means the choices become easier. Having enough money to purchase dinner and trees, means that their farms will be sustainable in the long term and their family will have what they need in the short term. And that’s the simple reason that addressing poverty is one of the best ways to protect the planet. Trees will never be the top priority, not while there is food to buy. Food trumps trees. Every time. But Fairtrade means you can have both.

The great thing is that you can support Fairtrade without doing much at all - just change your purchasing habits to favour Fairtrade endorsed products! Tea, coffee, chocolate, clothing and giftware are all good examples of Fairtrade products we can access in Australia.

In Bangalow, which is Fairtrade Town, and other local towns you will find lots of options once you start looking for them! And, just as Bangalow Public School’s Mother’s Day stall this year was all Fairtrade, so will its Father’s Day Stall be too (the stall is running on Thursday 1st September). So, the gift that your child brings home to celebrate you, will also be supporting Fairtrade.

This Fairtrade Fortnight you might like to encourage your child to explore Fairtrade some more as a fun activity. They could look out for the logo in the shops, create a poster about Fairtrade, draw themselves (or you) consuming or using a Fairtrade product, or make a list of Fairtrade products they were able to find in Bangalow. The more we ask for these products in the shops, the more pressure there will be to stock them and the more we can support people in developing countries! Let’s make a difference in this world this Fairtrade Fortnight.
