19th of May 1962, that`s when the world first got to look at and be blinded by the 2500 hand-sewn crystals on Marilyn Monroe`s dress in Madison Square Garden on John F. Kennedy`s 45th birthday celebration.
When she stepped on the stage and removed the fur coat a gasp left the audience`s mouth, and it made it one of the "most iconic moments in entertainment and political history."
The dress was designed by post-graduate designer Bob Mackie(who continues to win awards for his designs to this day) as his first-ever big project, he was working for an acclaimed designer Jean Louis who completed the piece.
Marilyn Monroe paid $1440 for it which roughly equals $12000 but after the performance, the price of the dress skyrocketed. In 1999 it was sold at an auction for $1,26 million.
However in 2016 Ripley`s Believe It Or Not! Museum paid $4,8 million for the dress and it`s been there since then as one of the most expensive pieces of pop-culture memorabilia of all time.
There were rumours going about that Kim will wear this dress since she was seen visiting the museum where the dress is and in the past few weeks she has been training harder than ever and I`m glad to say that the rumour turned out to be true, it is definitely going inside the fashion history book!
