iRest fundraiser for Year 12, 2023

Parent meditation session

Since 2017, Claire Smith has been teaching our Year 11 and 12 students at Byron High School a type of meditation that has been proven to work. The meditation is called iRest which stands for Integrative Restoration and is very popular with our students. It helps them to release stress and focus during the hectic final years of high school.

To assist Year 12 with their Formal fundraising efforts, Claire is very graciously offering an iRest session for BBHS parents. All proceeds from the Parent session will be donated to the Year 12 cohort.

The Parent Session details are as follows:

  • 20 places available for BBHS parents.
  • Thursday 18 May, from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, upstairs in the school Common Room.
  • $30.00 for the session
  • Registrations are essential as places are limited. Please contact the school office by phoning 6685 8188 to secure your place in this session and for payment details.

Below are some iRest testimonials from our Senior students:

I absolutely adore iRest, it’s genuinely the best part of my school week because it gives me a well needed break from my busy week. Claire just has a way of completely draining you from stress. I absolutely recommend this program to any school considering it.

Cheyenne Peled - Year 12 2023

"Claire comes to our school every Tuesday and Thursday and we are all invited to join her well planned classes and enjoy her hospitality. During the sessions she talks us through positive mindsets and how to remain relaxed and concentrated during these stressful years. I, and a lot of peers at school really appreciate her contribution to our life during assessment periods.

There are a lot of people who regularly attend her seasons and find it very helpful to have the guidance and structure in their school week. Claire is a wonderful addition to Byron Bay High School, and I always look forward to my sessions with her."

Luca Greig - Year 12 2023

During Year 11 and 12 at Byron Bay High School I attended the wonderful iRest sessions run by Claire. These sessions offered a safe space, facilitating mindfulness and rest practice. The approachable iRest techniques offered by Claire helped me not only during the sessions but enabled me to include mindfulness practice within my daily life; particularly through a stressful phase in my life.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day March and Service

On 25 April, we stopped to remember those who have lost their lives during war time. The March from Main Beach to the ANZAC memorial site will always be a part of Byron Bay’s ANZAC Day traditions. We pay our respect to those who have served our nation. Thank you for letting Yasmine and I speak on behalf of our school.

Luca Grieg - Vice Captain 2023

This year on ANZAC Day our School Captains Yasmin Gloeckl and Luca Greig represented Byron Bay High School. Both students gave outstanding speeches on the Kokoda Campaign during World War 2 at the Byron Bay Memorial service in town.

We also had 16 BBHS students proudly represent our school during the ANZAC Day March.

ANZAC Day Assembly

On Tuesday 2 May we held our school ANZAC Day Assembly. Michael Kennedy from Year 12 was the MC for the assembly. Year 8 students Sahana Marr and Gemma Roberts delivered the Acknowledgement of Country and China Esson from Year 12 read the Ode of Remembrance.

Soara Taylor and Luca Greig gave a poignant speech on the Vietnam War, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the ending of Australia’s involvement in this conflict. In their speech Soara and Luca explored the nature of fighting in Vietnam, the contribution of First Nations people in Defence units, the role of nurses, the enduring impact of the war on veterans today and the immediate and long-term impact of the war on local Vietnamese civilians.

We were also very fortunate to have some of our wonderful music students, Cinnamon Laddin-Catron, Leo Laddin-Catron, Floyd Whitaker and Kiarn Stenner perform a music rendition of the Australian National Anthem.

Another feature of our assembly was the informative and touching multimedia display our Librarian, Ms Ellis, created in tribute to her Great Uncle who served and lost his life in World War I. We invite you to view this video:

The BBHS student body was very respectful and engaged throughout the assembly and we thank our wonderful young leaders who took part in this assembly.

Year 9 Emu Gully camp

The Adventure Camp

We had a very unique camp experience at Emu Gully at the end of Term 1. When we arrived, students were in charge of setting up their tent sites, collecting their cooking equipment and ration packs. Everyone had fun lighting their own camp stoves and cooking food.

The activities we participated in were very much ANZAC-themed and were based around team building. The highlight was burning around the track in buggies and getting completely covered in mud! The groups had to drag boxes of artillery and even an old war cannon through perilous mud pits and other challenging obstacles around the Gully.

After everyone cleaned themselves up the best they could in the dam and the camp showers, the nice warm camp fire and hot chocolate drinks made the crisp evening so lovely! We enjoyed a fun night activity in which students pegged flour bombs at each other while trying to make it up the hill. The students also enjoyed socialising and cooking marshmallows around the fire pits, without any technology in sight, which was a highlight for many. We were so lucky to have incredible weather during the whole 3 days.

I am sure Year 9 all appreciated their own beds and a proper hot shower when they returned home. Thank you to all the BBHS teaching staff and Emu Gully staff for providing our Year 9 students with such a memorable experience. It was an absolute pleasure to observe so many students step up and accept challenges outside of their comfort zone, with confidence.
