Dear University community,

Welcome back Dustdevils! I trust all enjoyed a restorative Spring Break and are ready to finish the semester with certain success. Before you know it, our Spring 2023 Commencement Exercises will be here.

We’ve got a busy week of University offerings you’ll want to join in on and experience.

  • Monday, March 20– A remarkable and enduring friendship anchors a historic bridged art exhibition coming to Laredo that spans two art spaces, one at TAMIU’s CFPA Gallery and the other at the Laredo Center for the Arts downtown. “Ways of Seeing: One Exhibit, Two Spaces,” features artists and friends Eric Avery, M.D., and Sue Coe.
  • Coe will meet with TAMIU student artists Tuesday, March 21 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. A University-wide talk will take place Thursday, March 23 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. A public exhibition opening and Gallery Talk will be held at the TAMIU CFPA Gallery Friday, March 24 from 6 – 8 p.m.
  • Friday, March 24 – Intrigued by the Broadcast media industry? You won’t want to miss the first-ever Broadcast Ed Association Day (BEA Day) this Friday. Hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Psychology and Communication, it explores the pathways into media production, journalism, and communications for young professionals. Local and out-of-town media professionals and educators will join us and the event’s keynote address will be provided by Maegan Vazquez, a Laredo native and current CNN White House Reporter.   • Saturday, March 25 – It’s time for The Big Event, our annual TAMIU Day of Service. We’re going to don our gardening gloves and plant trees at North Central Park. Free transportation is provided from TAMIU to the Park. This service event brings TAMIU students, faculty, staff l alumni and community members together in service. Details here.

On the horizon:

  • On Monday, March 27, TAMIU’s Dr. Mehnaaz Momen will be part of a lecture on Identity and Belonging in the Bengali Diaspora. She’ll be joined by authors Saborna Roychowdhury and Chaitali Sen. Here's more.
  • On Wednesday, March 29, The Human Library, an interactive event that focuses on holding personal conversations that challenge stigmas and stereotypes, returns to TAMIU. Find out all about it.
  • Congratulations to our graduate student winners in the Texas A&M University System’s Pathways Research Symposium: Muhammad Amin, First Place; Ayman Samak Second Place, and Edith Garza-Garza, First Place. In total, 40 faculty, staff, and students participated.
  • Aisha Christa Atkinson, A TAMIU alum, (’20) has been named 2023 Texas Mother of the Year by American Mothers, Inc. Atkinson and other honorees from across the United States will be recognized during the 88th National Convention of American Mothers, Inc. (AMI) this April in Omaha, NE.
  • And, no fooling…Discover TAMIU 2023 is coming Saturday, April 1. It’s a great time to share our campus with people of all ages with fun activities and events that showcase our Dustdevil spirit. More details coming.
  • Registration for Maymester, Summer, and Fall 2003 begins Monday, April 3. Find out more via our Registration Hub.

TAMIU @ LC Day Comes to Main Campus Tuesday

TAMIU Open House at LC, an opportunity for Laredo College students to explore their transfer opportunities at their hometown University, will be held at LC Tuesday, March 21 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. outside the Kazen Center.

All Majors Career Fair Scheduled for March 21 in STC Rotunda

Our All Majors Career Fair is happening Tuesday, March 21 from 1 - 4 p.m. in the Student Center Rotunda. Over 30 recruiters from various fields will be in attendance.

Upcoming Workshop Pays Tribute to Pink Floyd Tuesday, March 21

We're celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s, "The Dark Side of the Moon" with a workshop for TAMIU faculty, staff, and students Tuesday, March 21 from 2 - 4 p.m. in Student Center 120. The workshop, given by Dr. Emily Vanchella, focuses on the concept album's distinctiveness with a complete listen of the album. Attendees will also talk about what they notice and hear, as well an interpretation of the lyrics and instrumentals.

Staggs Academy to Host Final Open House Session Wednesday, March 22

Only one more free information session for parents and students interested in earning high school and college credit simultaneously at the Julieta and Frank Staggs Academy of International and STEM Studies at TAMIU. The remaining Open House Session is Wednesday, March 22 at 6 p.m. in the Western Hemispheric Trade Center, room 111 on the ground floor. Information will be available in English or Spanish.

TAMIU Hosts First-Ever Broadcast ED Association Day, Welcomes CNN Reporters and Laredoan Maegan Vazquez

TAMIU's College of Arts and Sciences, department of Psychology and Communication will host its first-ever Broadcast Education Association Day Friday, March 24. BEA Day showcases pathways into media production, journalism and communications for young professionals. Participants will be joined by local and out of town media professionals and educators. The event’s keynote address will be provided by Maegan Vazquez, a Laredo native and current CNN White House Reporter.

The Big Event Scheduled for Saturday, March 25 at North Central Park

On Saturday, March 25, from 8:30 a.m - 1 p.m., TAMIU students will don their gardening gloves and plant trees during "The Big Event," the University’s annual TAMIU day of service. Students will gather at North Central Park, located on 10202 International Boulevard, where they will plant 150 trees, paint a mural, and pick up trash and debris.

The Human Library Returns to TAMIU Wednesday, March 29

For the second year in a row, The Human Library, an interactive event that focuses on holding personal conversations that challenge stigmas and stereotypes, returns to TAMIU. The one-of-a-kind experience is slated for Wednesday, March 29, from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library's Great Room. Admission is free of charge and open to all. Funding for the event is made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas.

Discover TAMIU Happening Saturday, April 1

Get ready to Discover TAMIU! Join us for a day full of fun with over 100 activities for the entire family Saturday, April 1, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. At Discover TAMIU, you can choose from five exciting pathways to explore, engage, and enjoy. Each affords everyone a special Discover TAMIU experience. Admission to the event and all activities are free and open to the public.

TAMIU Athletics Update
