Ingredients

Vanilla cake box mix

One (16 ounce) package brown sugar

One cup butter

One fourth teaspoon salt

Two thirds cup evaporated milk

One (16 ounce) package of sifted confectioners' sugar

Two teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Begin by making the cake portion of this dessert by following the instructions on the bake of the box mix.

Place the batter in a greased nine by nine inch circular pan, and put it in the oven. The cake will bake for about 30 minutes, and once done, leave it to cool for about an hour.

While the cake is baking and cooling, combine brown sugar and salt in a saucepan over medium heat.

Stir until brown sugar is dissolved, about three minutes.

Add evaporated milk and continue stirring.

Bring to a gentle boil and let bubble for about four minutes, stirring constantly to avoid sticking.

Remove from heat and allow to cool for about five minutes.

Next, mix confectioners' sugar and vanilla extract into the caramel mixture using an electric mixer until icing thickens to the desired consistency.

Spread icing onto the cooled cake layers and enjoy. Welcome the chirping birds and blooming flowers into your house with this amazing southern caramel cake.
