I am here to help you facilitate the most inspired musician you have within you.

I work with musicians at all levels, on all instruments, empowering their ability to unleash further expressive potential through instrumental practice and/or explorations in improvisation.

Graduating from The Manhattan School of Music in 1999, the following 20+ years encompassed working and collaborating passionately through New York City's jazz, experimental, and contemporary music worlds, and beyond. Over that course of time, I cultivated many different practices and studies to assist me in the evolution of musical creativity and learning. I am here to share all of this with you.

INSTRUMENTAL PRACTICE

Deepening the relationship with your instrument

I will introduce you to new ways of practicing and understanding instrumental technique to refresh, strengthen, and guide you into becoming more intimate and exploratory with your instrument in day-to-day practice. We will work with new approaches, influences, and possibilities to discover and advance the expressive potential.

For all instruments — transforming routine practice into raw musical inspiration!

We will deconstruct the reasons and components of different techniques in order to understand their essence and inherent creative possibilities. This will help you to connect with your own personal language and true inspiration for each foundational practice. Creative methods of technical practice will then also be developed particular to you so that everything becomes more inspiring and alive!

For trombone, and other brass players — stretch the ability!

Besides what I wrote above, for the brass players in particular, I will help you to get free from unwanted habits and limitations in your playing by working with breath, movement, and posture, as well as, for example, learning to incorporate playing music originally intended for other instruments. We will experiment and discover new techniques and exercises to get stronger, with newfound facility and perspective.

IMPROVISATION

Playing with freedom

Improvisation is a spontaneous inventing through our expressive influences and spirit, using all of the musical ingredients and energies we love and are curious about to explore and interact with. I have developed many different ways to expand upon these possibilities and put them into practice. What I will share with you will touch on the following three major essentials:

• Full range of expression
• Instrumental ability
• New approaches for creativity

Expression

We will expand around getting free from the conventional "shoulds" inherent to stylistic approaches in order to further unleash the imaginative possibilities, energy, and authentic musical expression.

Instrumental abilities

We will explore many different musical parameters, such as rhythm, space, melody, dynamics, and timbre, to extend the range of instrumental relationship and ability.

Creativity

We will develop deeper listening skills, awareness, imagination, and the understanding of energy in music, introducing a wide array of resources (different music from around the world, other artistic mediums, and body-mind awareness practices).

INVESTMENT: $100/hr

Lessons are available in person at home (yours or mine), outdoors in nature, online/remotely, or from the music studio, school, or performance space when available.
