Zamani Music Singer, Songwriter, Producer

MUSIC BIOGRAPHY

Just 17 years old, Zamani’s singing has been described as captivating, satiny-soulful and refreshingly pure! Zamani skillfully arranges, produces and writes original musical works and will release her debut EP in fall 2018. Greatly inspired by the soul, jazz and pop divas of this era, Zamani lists India Aire, Jill Scott, Amel Larrieux, Natalie Cole, Solange, Mariah Carey, Betty Carter, and Lalah Hathaway - among her many musical influences.

Hailing from a musical family – her mother an ECMA award-winning songwriter and Black folk music vocalist, her father an ECMA award-winning smooth jazz guitarist - Zamani’s unique musical style reflects a lifetime of eclectic musical exposures.

Showcase Nov 25, 2017

Zamani’s first foray into performing began with an invitation to perform at the popular For the Love of God Concert produced by Corey Adams (son of local jazz hero Bucky Adams) in 2014 and 2015 where she both surprised and wowed the audience with her mature sound. However, it was her debut jazz performance at the prestigious Halifax TD International Jazz Festival that quickly established her as a jazz and R&B balladeer. Her performance won the attention, praise and compliments of TD Jazz Fest headliner Sharon Jones - the powerhouse vocalist of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

In 2016, Zamani was presented as a featured performer at the 18th Annual African Nova Scotian Music Awards where she sang to critical acclaim thus establishing herself as a “rising star”. One year later she was named co-recipient of the 2018 ANSMA Portia White Youth Award along with a nomination for Emerging Artist. That same month Zamani received the Jongleur Youth Arts Performance Award. As a vocalist with Jeff Goodspeed’s Cuban music ensemble Preston Primos Zamani made her jazz performance debut at Halifax’s premiere jazz club - Stayner’s in November 2017 – proving her capability in the jazz as well as R&B genre.

collaborations & Songwriting

Creating music that is expressive, compelling and relevant is what allows Zamani to attract an eclectic and diverse audience. A unique talent displaying compositional versatility, Zamani places song writing at the core of her triad of musical gifts – along with her sultry vocal delivery and captivating stage presence. For one young woman and a laptop Zamani creates a performance with a far-reaching sound attributable to her brilliant lyrics and well-placed instrumentation that she literally curates into passionately produced original songs. Zamani was a surprise special guest songwriter at the 2017 African Nova Scotian Songwriters Circle and was invited back in 2018 after receiving overwhelming rave reviews. This earned Zamani a featured role at the 2018 Halifax May Works Festival Songwriters Circle.

As a collaborator Zamani has successfully worked with many esteemed local musicians including: Owen Lee, Shawn Downey, Harvi Millar, Cindi Cain, Silvio Pupo, and JR Smith. She is a frequent collaborator with the Preston Primos jazz ensemble lead by local jazz icon Jeff Goodspeed and Cuban vocal master Augusto Enriquez. Most recently, she collaborated with Jayden Austin and Shay Pitts at the 2017 NSMW all ages showcase. In addition the three collaborated on writing and producing a dynamic hip hop track and follow-up video “Switchin Lanes” which features Zamani on lead vocals. The video was released on YouTube in June 2018. Zamani’s duet vocal collaborations with singer Amariah Bernard Washington landed the pair the prestigious ANSMA Portia White Youth Award and a Jongleur Youth Arts Performance Award in 2018. In March 2019 Zamani will co-host a concert in collaboration with 16 year old rising guitar star Logan Richard of PEI.
