Success for All!

Black History Month

February is Black History Month, an opportunity to acknowledge, celebrate and learn more about the important contributions and achievements Black Canadians made and continue to make in our country and around the world.

Student Agency Session

Approximately 20 students from NDSS recently participated in a student agency to help the BC Principals and Vice-Principals Association (BCPVPA) address areas in need of systemic change. The BCPVPA is gathering student voice and presenting information at the BCPVPA IDEAS conference in Vancouver in February.

The Empty Bowl Project

The NDSS Student Council and Pottery Program are once again putting on their Empty Bowl fundraiser. The event this year will be held Thursday, March 9, 2023. Tickets are available at the NDSS office. This simple meal and gift of an empty pottery bowl to take home serve as a reminder of the continuing hunger within our own community. There will also be locally-made and donated items available for purchase. All proceeds from the event will go to Loaves and Fishes.

Education Committee Meeting

At the Education Committee Meeting on Wednesday, February 1, the committee received a presentation from the Department of Learning Services outlining some objectives and strategies around two of the Board Goals. The committee discussed the three-year local school calendar. Discussions will continue at a future meeting. The committee also received an update on AP 348 - Research in Schools. Coldest Night of the Year

Diane McGonigle has set up a Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools team for the Coldest Night of the Year event on Saturday, February 25. This event is a 2km or 5km walk/fundraiser to support and serve people and families experiencing homelessness, hurt, and hunger in our community. They are inviting staff and their families to join them on the walk and/or fundraise for the event.

Hul’q’umi’num’ Language | Focus on feelings

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS) is pleased to continue sharing Hul’q’umi’num’ phrases. This year's focus is on feelings. These phrases have been provided by the Hul’q’umi’num’ teachers of NLPS to share with educators, students and the larger community so that we can continue our learning journey together with the language of the land.

Protecting Indigenous Knowledge and Heritage: A Global Challenge

Join us for a conversation with James (Sa'ke'j) Henderson on Wednesday, February 15. Sa'ke'j will discuss important topics ranging from what constitutes Indigenous knowledge and who may use it; the importance of preserving Indigenous languages; how knowledge is transmitted in Indigenous communities; issues in performing arts and artwork and more.
