This Evening's Program

7th Grade Advanced Band

Teleportation

Timothy Loest (b. 1963)

Timothy Loest, composer of both Advanced Band pieces, has a wonderful talent of painting a picture with musical elements. Mr. Loest received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Illinois State University and his Master of Music degree from Northwestern University.

Teleportation uses interlocking repetitive patterns to represent futuristic travel to a time when matter is broken down and beamed across space only to be reassembled elsewhere.

Night Flight of the Gargoyles

Timothy Loest (b. 1963)

Night Flight of the Gargoyles begins with a vengeful introduction of the main melody before speeding through the night at a gripping tempo. Listen carefully for the surprise gargoyle effects in the clarinet section.

8th Grade Symphonic Band

Russian Sailor's Dance

Reinhold Gliere (1875 - 1956)

Arr. Mark Williams

Russian Sailor's Dance is a theme and variation style piece based on the Russian folk tune called Yablochka. Originally written for Gliere's ballet The Red Poppy from 1927 it weaves the main melody through different sections of the ensemble with several stylistic and tempo changes increasing steadily in pace and power to the finish.

Beetlejuice

Danny Elfman (b. 1953)

Arr. Douglas Wagner

Danny Elfman is an American composer, singer, and songwriter. He came to prominence as the singer-songwriter for the new wave band Oingo Boingo in the early 1980s. Since the 1990s, Elfman has garnered international recognition for composing over 100 feature film scores, as well as compositions for television, stage productions, and the concert hall.

Danny Elfman's music for the 1988 Tim Burton movie Beetlejuice is a wonderful way for young musicians to experience his dark yet whimsical compositional style. Melodies float over a driving "oom-pah" style accompaniment interspersed with brief jolts into different time signatures. The piece comes to rest with a final chord in the low voices punctuated by a single chime note in the percussion section

Wind Ensemble

Gallant Zouaves

Karl King (1891 - 1971)

Karl L. King was a United States march music bandmaster and composer. He is best known as the composer of "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite". King the composer published more than 300 works: galops, waltzes, overtures, serenades, rags, and 188 marches and screamers. It could be said that King did for the circus march what Sousa did for the patriotic march.

Karl King’s “Gallant Zouaves” is a classic military-styled march penned during his early days as a circus bandmaster. Bright, martial melodies are followed by a regimental “trumpet and drum” trio, subsequently embellished by a woodwind countermelody and then a ponderous bass line, before ending with a rousing final strain. Composed for the amateur, military precision zouave drill teams prevalent at the turn of the century, this march includes an excerpt from the famous military song, The Girl I Left Behind Me, in the woodwind parts at the trio.

Hymn for the Innocent

Julie Giroux (b. 1961)

Julie Giroux graduated from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge LA in 1984. She started playing piano at 3 years of age and began composing at the age of 8 and has been composing ever since. Her first published work for concert band was composed at the age of 13.

Julie began composing commercially in 1984. She was hired by Oscar winning composer Bill Conti as an orchestrator, her first project with Conti being “North & South” the mini-series. With over 100 film, television and video game credits, Giroux collaborated with dozens of film composers, producers, and celebrities. Projects she has worked on have been nominated for Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Golden Globe awards. She has won individual Emmy Awards in the field of “Outstanding Individual Achievement in Music Direction”. When she won her first Emmy Award, she was the first woman and the youngest person to ever win that award. She has won it three times.

Giroux has also published a large category of classical works with emphasis on original compositions for Wind Band. She is greatly sought after as a composer and recently completed her 5th Symphony“Sun, Rain & Wind” which premiered in June, 2018.

Giroux has been a true force in a male dominated field and has accrued many previously male only awards.

Hymn for the Innocent is a tribute to all the innocent lives that are lost whether by accident, disease or acts of violence. It also includes all those who serve, here and abroad, military and domestic who have sworn to protect the innocent and have lost their lives or lead a handicapped life as a result of this service. What has been lost by their passing is an infinite list of possibilities. What they could have been, could have accomplished or achieved and the holes left in all the lives they touched and would have affected surely is a sorrow above all sorrows.

Loss is never easy but when loved ones are taken before their time the loss and grief seem to be compounded. This hymn is for them. This hymn is for the survivors as well. My hope is that this music, this hymn can be a part of a healing process for some listener out there.

Grief never goes away but music can be an instrument that can help you live with it.

His father was a prominent hip-hop producer in the late-1980s in Southern California, and his mother was a sought-after gospel singer from West Virginia. Kevin Day is a composer, conductor, producer, and multi-instrumentalist on tuba, euphonium, jazz piano and more, whose music often intersects between the worlds of jazz, minimalism, Latin music, fusion, and contemporary classical idioms.

Day, whose music often intersects between the worlds of jazz, minimalism, Latin music, fusion, and contemporary classical idioms, has composed over 200 works, and has had numerous performances throughout the United States, Russia, Austria, Australia, Taiwan, South Africa, and Japan.

Shimmering Sunshine is a composition that depicts the sun whenever it is positioned at high noon, at its brightest point during the day. Throughout the piece, there are different “shimmers” of bright light that bounce around from instrument to instrument, depicting moments of sunshine both beautiful and at the same time, powerful.
