"Hi Mike, I just want to once again say thank you for taking the time to teach us lighting and photoshop. It was extremely helpful, fun, and all around one of the best classes I’ve had. 20/10 on class and instructor! I will definitely be putting these lessons to good use. Everyone loved it! If you ever teach any more photography classes let me know please. Truly, Mike, thank you! You made it fun and easy. I learned more today about lighting than 4 years of film classes. I literally felt something click in my brain that I didn’t get before. It was incredibly helpful and everyone left super informed. We also had a lot of fun." Jacqueline Parra, Los Angeles
Lighting
We'll teach you to use sunlight, window light, simple room lighting, LEDs and strobes. Our no-nonsense methods of lighting, flatters the subject, without intimidating them. (Sometimes strobes and big softboxes can be a little unnerving to people that are not used to being photographed). At Lifestyle Boudoir, we use all types of lighting. The set, the time of day, and the effect that we're trying to create changes throughout the session, and so does the light. When and why to use each can be confusing. I will say this, you don't need to invest thousands of dollars in lighting equipment to get fantastic results, and create images that your clients will pay good money for.
LEDS?
Above: These are some of the most common LED lights I currently use. LEDS are relatively inexpensive, and unlike strobes, what you see in-camera is what you get.
Strobes?
Above: These are some of the flashes (or Strobes) I currently use. These are made by Godox and are very reasonably priced. To new photographers, strobes can be scary. Do YOU need them? Not necessarily. It's more than possible to shoot without ever purchasing or mastering strobes. Mastering simple lighting, and focusing more on the client is 100 x better!
Cameras and Lenses
I'm here to tell you, after 34 years of doing this, what you can do with some very basic cameras and lenses is up to you, and can be less limiting than owning a ton of stuff. You just need the right training! Honestly, you only need 1 or 2 lenses at the most, to do stunning work. It's not the camera, it's the person using it! We'll simplify it for you!
Do you needs this many cameras? - Definitely NOT!
I use Fujifilm cameras for the absolute best skin tones. But you can use Nikon, Canon, Sony- really, the brand or system isn't the most important thing to consider, as all contemporary cameras take amazing photos. If you don't already have a camera and lenses, we'll help you get what's right FOR YOU, and within your budget.
Posing
Let's face it, most women have no idea how to pose. This is something that, honestly, can keep a woman from wanting to shoot. They want to look graceful, natural, un-posed, confident and sexy. Not stiff and scared! By knowing a core number of flattering poses, and demonstrating them for the client, they will feel and become more confident! And you'll capture many more salable images.
Posing your clients to look & feel confident and sexy is one of your most valuable tools to creating a successful session.
Sets or backgrounds? Studio or Home-based?
Having been there and done that, I've had a main street studio, I've photographed in hotels and client's homes, and have had multiple home-based business locations. Currently, I have a home-based studio in a lovely 3 bedroom + loft house in Las Vegas, and I'm not looking to change that anytime soon. It's amazing! Is that for you? I'll help you figure out what's best for you, and why.
You'll learn to create TIMELESS images! Photographs you're clients will be thrilled to look back on for decades to come. We'll work with you to discover and create YOUR OWN style. We'll teach you where to get your inspiration from, and how to make it your own. Not just to copy the work of others- and, definitely NOT just that fad stuff you'll see in those Boudoir Facebook groups.
Makeup Artist?
The Pros and Cons of having an artist, and where to find good, reliable artists. We always supply makeup for our clients, complimentary. There are many reasons. As a male boudoir photographer, having a female makeup artist here for the session, it not only helps the client look more polished, it makes them feel more comfortable during the session, and frankly, keeps me protected too!
A makeup artist adds to the level of service & professionalism. Learn how to get & negotiate an artist for your sessions. A good artist will elevate the entire experience for the client.
Sales and Merchandising.
These are probably the most misunderstood (and feared) areas of boudoir, or any photography business. Most new photographers are afraid to charge what they're worth, and often just include all the digitals with the session, so they don't have to learn to sell their work. That's just NOT doing your clients, or your photography, any justice! Women deserve to get a beautifully printed and bound album from their session, not a fricken thumb drive. And, you deserve to be paid what you're worth!
Post Processing / Retouching
What software should you use? Do you need to spend months or years learning Photoshop, or are there other, easier alternatives that are less expensive with little-to-no learning curve? I can help demystify this for you, and help you get professional results much, much faster.
Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard- but are there alternatives? YES!! We'll show you how to do gorgeous edits at a fraction of the cost, with no experience necessary!
Who is this training for?
Whether you're already established Photographer and just want to add Boudoir to your menu, or someone that wants to just start doing this to earn some extra money, I can help you reach your goals! Boudoir is something you can start small with, without a large cash outlay for new equipment, sets, etc. I'll give you some great recommendations on how to start offering boudoir without spending big $$$.
