Story Starters

Soak Up The Sun

Golfers, take note: Bighorn Meadows Resort is situated in one of the top golf destinations in BC, and boasts easy access to 12 beautifully landscaped courses – nine within a 30-minute drive. The resort is conveniently located on the ninth fairway of the majestic Springs Golf Course, consistently rated among BC’s top golf experiences; and within a five-minute drive of the Radium Course, whose enthralling valley vistas will make it hard to keep your eye on the ball.

Outdoor enthusiasts can reconnect with nature by embarking on a truly spectacular hike in the Canadian Rockies, whose magnificent wilderness boasts over 200 kilometres of hiking trails leading to endless panoramas, sweeping river valleys, lush forests and glacial peaks. Nearby Kootenay National Park is filled with hikes catering to all fitness levels – along with refreshing mountain rivers, steamy hot springs and tumbling waterfalls – so everyone in your group can tag along.

Radium also lies within the magical Valley of a Thousand Peaks, where some of the most diverse cycling trails in Canada await. Rent bikes at Bighorn Meadows Resort, then plunge into the wilderness and find a trail to suit. Whether you’re seeking thrilling descents, epic cross-country or meandering paths, you’re sure to find a trail to satisfy your group’s ages and skill levels.

#Protip: Mt Swansea is ideal for intermediate to advanced adventurers, while Deja View and Old Coach Trail Loop is a lightly trafficked jaunt near the river that’s best for moderate riders.

Fun For The Whole Family

Everyone in your clan will enjoy the astonishing variety of activities offered at Bighorn Meadows Resort, in the nearby Kootenay National Park and throughout the Columbia Valley. Rent canoes or kayaks from Columbia River Paddle and take a spin along the placid waters of Lake Windermere – or, for more heart-pumping fun, book a ziplining excursion with Valley Zipline Adventures where you’ll soar through a scenic tableau looking over the Columbia Valley Wetlands and the Purcell Mountains. A 10-minute drive from Radium will bring you to Luxor Corrals, where the whole family can channel their inner cowboy while learning to ride horseback. For a cultured tour, wander the region’s art galleries and museums, including the Beeland all-natural store and gallery in nearby Spillimacheen, where you can try pure Rocky Mountain honey in several sweet treats (and skincare!).

One of the largest and warmest lakes in the Kootenay Rockies, Lake Windermere is particularly attractive to sun worshippers and water babies. While the combination of sun and splashing around the shoreline is a summer memory waiting to happen, visitors will find plenty to do in winter, including the Lake Windermere Whiteway – a 30-kilometre track of ice linking the towns of Invermere and Windermere, perfect for skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating or fatbiking. When warmer weather hits, select your beach of choice – Kinsmen Beach or James Chabot Park in Invermere, or Windermere Beach in Windermere – and settle in for a long day of rejuvenating sunshine.

Gourmands, rest assured: you’ll never go hungry in Radium! If you prefer low-key meals, take the 10-minute stroll to the family-owned Mountainside Market, the town’s favourite and only grocery store. At the Springs Course, Elevations Dining boasts an outdoor patio where you can kick back with a casual meal and cocktail and take in the view of the Columbia Valley wetlands and surrounding mountain ranges. Fuel up for active days at the town coffee shop, or wind down with a few pints at the local pub. Or, if you prefer to dine in your room, take advantage of Bighorn Meadows Resort’s personalized grocery delivery service for a no-effort meal.

A Bit of R&R

There’s nothing better than soaking in healing waters in the fresh air – and, when you stay at Bighorn Meadows Resort, you’ll have a choice between three options: the Radium Hot Springs Pools, Fairmont Hot Springs (30 minutes to the south) or Lussier Hot Springs in White Swan Provincial Park (a one-hour drive to the southeast). Each of these muscle-melting hot springs is accessible to everyone and surrounded by a spectacular mountain setting. Closest to the resort is Radium, which comprises two pools – one warm and one cool – whose mineral-rich waters are uniquely odourless, and offer an inviting place to wind down at the end of a long day.

Winter & Summer Adventures

The dog days of summer shine exceptionally brightly on Radium, and Bighorn Meadows Resort offers a comfy respite after a long day of fun. For groups seeking thrills, Kootenay River Runners offers memorable rafting trips in the Rockies, with children as young as five, grandparents and everyone in-between welcome to join the fun (hot tip: spring for the full day’s adventure, where you’ll raft 45 kilometres past a massive waterfall). Golfers will want to head straight to the Columbia Valley Golf Trail, a collection of eight courses situated between Radium and Fairmont Hot Springs. There’s plenty of fun to be had in Kootenay National Park, whether exploring deep canyons, marvelling at majestic waterfalls or traversing the backcountry trails. Of course, no trip to Radium is complete without a visit to Lake Windermere, nestled between the Rocky Mountains to the east and the Purcell range to the west. Lounge at one of three beaches, try your hand at fishing, or rent a boat and spend the entire afternoon floating under the summer sun.

Known as the “warm side of the Rockies,” Radium is also a great place to while away the winter. Set up your base camp at Bighorn Meadows Resort, then spend a few days, a week or longer flying down the local ski hills, skating from Invermere to Windermere across the famous Guiness Book of Records Lake Windermere Whiteway, sledding down powered slopes, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing… the list goes on! (Just remember to keep informed of the latest avalanche conditions when travelling in the backcountry.) At day’s end, pop to one of the nearby hot springs for a well-earned soak. Talk about paradise!
