A storm kit? Yes, that's right! In 2019, one of Hurricane Florence's trajectories lined up with campus and students, like their families, were wondering what resources they should have ready. Before 2019, we didn't concern ourselves with preparing an emergency kit list, but "Florence" changed our minds! Liberty University has all kinds of emergency protocols in place, including power generators in case of a storm, but the level of confidence you can give yourself (and your student) by having a few items on-hand will exponentially help them face a storm more confidently.
Consider some of the following dry, non-perishable items and canned goods:
- Canned fruit or vegetables (cans with pull-top lids)
- Beef Jerky, Slim Jims, tuna packs with crackers, Vienna sausages
- Trail mix, dried fruit, shelled nuts
- Granola, cereal bars, Pop Tarts
- Individual Cereal boxes
- Snack peanut butter or cheese crackers
- Canned/spray cheese and crackers
- Pudding and/or J-ello snacks readymade
Include beverages like bottled water, Gatorade, juice boxes, and Ensure or Boost (protein shakes)
Tools and Equipment
- Bible or New Testament in print
- Board game, coloring book and crayons, assorted NERF sport balls
- Two or three 30-gallon trash bags
- Utensils, disposable bowls or plates
- Manual can opener
- Lysol or Clorox wipes for food clean-up
- Wet Ones antibacterial wipes for hands
- Bath Wipes to help maintain daily hygiene
- Flashlight with extra batteries, or perhaps a solar-charged lantern
- Battery pack for mobile phone and laptop use if they don't have a car to use to charge them (include necessary adapter and/or cables, as required)
- Transistor radio with extra batteries for weather and news updates
- Battery-operated fan with extra batteries for the warmer weather
- Extra blanket, comforter, or sleeping bag for colder temperatures
- Rain boots, jacket, and gloves
- A $20 bill or two, in case the power or Internet connection goes out and disables the ATM/card reader systems
