WHAT'S HAPPENING IN PDHPE

With the change in seasons there has been a change in the air in PDHPE this term and late in Term 1. Mr McCallie is readying the student population for the winter sports as well as Cross Country this week and Athletics, which is on the horizon. The PDHPE department staff and students have studied their playbooks and delivering both on and off the field. Congratulations to all those students Mr McCallie mentioned in his column further in to the newsletter and congratulations to all those students who turn up every day and do their best in PDHPE lessons.

YEAR 7

Year 7 have been honing their evasion skills in Australian Football and their spatial awareness in some minor games. In the theory lessons they have studied the transitions into high school and are now looking at, healthy and unhealthy relationships as well harassment and vilification in all its forms and investigated the positive impact each person can have if they stand up for someone who is need of help.

YEAR 8

Year 8 have been working well throughout their own relationships unit and are now moving on to safety for themselves and others in the school and community. In practical lessons, Year 8 have participated in a target game, European handball and are now moving forward in athletics.

YEAR 9

The Year 9 Lean on Me theory unit focussed on racism, resilience and support for each other and this group were outstanding when it came to their Remember the Titans assessment task. The creative responses that our students collaboratively produced showed the true calibre the students in this year group. Year 9 also participated in Netball, Australian Rules football, Cross Country and Athletics this term and their skill level and game sense has improved markedly. Year 9 PASS studied Traditional Indigenous games and took on the coaching by teaching their games to other groups and they also experienced archery for the first time.

YEAR 10

Year 10 studied the Safety in Adolescence and Planning a Safe Party. In practical lessons the have been eagerly participating in racquet sports such as badminton, tennis, paddle tennis and building their repertoire of skills throughout the term.

YEAR 11 AND 12

Our senior students have continued their hard work in CAFS, PDHPE, SLR and Sports Coaching as they progress towards their exams and assessment tasks.

ISSUES COVERED IN THE PDHPE SYLLABUS

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is one of the key learning areas for students in Year 7 to 10. Our school’s PDHPE program aims to provide opportunities for students to learn about, and practise ways of, adopting and maintaining a healthy, productive and active life. It also involves students learning through movement experiences that are both challenging and enjoyable, and improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence in a variety of contexts. It promotes the value of physical activity in their lives.

Our school’s PDHPE program provides the opportunity for students to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of themselves and others, now and in the future. These issues include physical activity, mental health, drug use, road safety, sexuality and sexual health, nutrition, respectful relationships, personal safety, diversity, gender roles and discrimination.

Some of the content of the program deals with sensitive issues. The school recognises this by teaching about these issues within the context of a developmentally appropriate program and by providing information to you about the program.

The PDHPE program aims to encourage students to make informed decisions about their lifestyle taking into account the values of the family, culture and religion to which they belong. The school program will be implemented in a manner that supports the role of parents and caregivers, and reflects the ethos of the school community.

An overview of some of the content of the PDHPE program that may be considered sensitive is provided below.

BPHS HAS A NEW SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

Introducing Mr Guy Wright

I am really looking forward to working with staff, students, P&C and our community to ensure ALL of our students gain an outstanding education that sets them on a positive pathway for life. I would like to acknowledge the outstanding work of Mr Chris Randle who has served as Principal for the past several years and more recently Mr Damien Borg who served as Relieving Principal for term one this year. I have heard many great stories about Banora Point High School and what I have seen so far, I like. I like that:

  • All students wear the full school uniform and the uniform looks so impressive
  • All students are always in classes learning
  • The school environment is welcoming
  • Staff and students are very friendly
  • Academic focus on learning (leading to quality HSC results)
  • Leader in sport and sporting opportunities
  • Quality CAPA programs for students (eg Art/Music Drama)
  • Professional and quality teachers
  • Outstanding students
  • Support classes are engaging and student focused

I was so impressed with the SRC and the school Anzac Day assembly held last Wednesday. I would also like to mention the speech delivered by our captain Betty Ward at the Tweed Heads Anzac Day ceremony. In my opinion, she was the best speaker at the event that had well over 3000 people in attendance. Also a big thank you to all students who marched at the parade. We had good representation from Banora Point High School.

I have taught in many schools across NSW including: Mullumbimby High; Dunheved High; Asquith Girls High; Kingscliff High (22 years); Bonnyrigg High; Woolgoolga High (10 years as Principal); Wollumbin High (3 Years as Principal). I have taught many HSC subjects including Economics, Business Studies, Geography, Legal Studies, Computing Studies, Software Design and Development, Information Processes and Technology, and Industrial Technology Multimedia.

Over the next few weeks, I will hear about many more of the great things that occur at Banora Point High School and together with staff, students, parents and community members, I look forward to collaboratively charting a course that delivers an outstanding education for ALL of our students.

STUDENT ABSENCE SMS NOTIFICATIONS

Daily SMS’s and Monday reminders are coming your way to help address our schools unexplained absences.
  • Parents receive a daily SMS of their child/s absence.
  • Parents are encouraged to reply to this SMS with an explanation e.g. sick, holiday etc.
  • If BPHS doesn’t receive a response to the 1st SMS, a friendly reminder SMS will be sent out the following Monday for an opportunity to respond.

BPHS have noticed a high number of student absences being unexplained, therefore we are now giving parents/carers the opportunity to reply daily and with a follow up reminder to help us all tackle the number of unexplained absences.

Students’ attending school regularly is important in so many ways, socially, emotionally, physically and academically. At BPHS we endeavour to provide a close working partnership with students, parents, teachers and the community. Staff at BPHS understand the workload and commitments we all have and are now hoping that we make an easier form of communication to address your child absences. If you have any major concerns, BPHS have an open-door policy and are happy to discuss any attendance issues and hopefully develop a relationship to increase your child’s attendance to achieve their goals and set up for the future.

SCHOOL STUDENT TRAVEL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS

SCHOOL TRAVEL PASSES

Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

New Student Opal cards (including new Term Bus Passes) will be sent to the student’s nominated postal address within two weeks of their application being approved. Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

TERMS OF USE

Students using Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use.

All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.

ANZAC DAY

Thank you and congratulations to the students who marched and represented Banora Point High School. A good mix of all years proudly and respectfully participated in the 10.30am ceremony at Jack Evans Boat Harbour in Tweed Heads. A special mention to our students who had roles in the ceremony and laid a wreath for the school in memory of all men and women who have served, fought and died for our country. Our school captain Betty, delivered a memorable recount of the life of one of our local heroes who fought in World War 1. Betty's family, including her dad who is serving in the Navy were in the audience for her 5 minute speech which was delivered with poise and dignity.

The students enjoyed a lunch provided by Twin Towns after the event.

Thank you again to all students and staff who attended. Your effort is valued by the community.

Mr. Chris Boyle - Classroom Teacher

P&C COMMITTEE MEETING

OUR NEXT p&c MEETING IS TODAY AT 6.30PM

Our committee work tirelessly for our school and their support and assistance is not only very appreciated but it is very valued. It enables us to purchase resources for our students from the funds they raise. We had a very successful first meeting of the year earlier in the month and it was fantastic to see some new faces. Please consider joining our wonderful committee made up of dedicated parents and citizens. It is a great opportunity to stimulate fresh ideas and support Banora Point High School P&C initiatives.

P&C LEVY

Like most public entities, our P&C has overheads such as insurance and state body levies which can inhibit the ability to perform all the great things they do. You will see below, a P&C Levy information sheet around what has been proposed and the reasons why this is necessary. While I appreciate it is difficult to be available for the fundraising events our active P&C team completes, I encourage you to read the information below and help as you can. Ultimately, the stronger our P&C the more they can assist our students.

Please do not hesitate to contact the P&C executive with any queries about the voluntary levy: banorapointhighschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au

THE FACTS ABOUT VAPING

Please visit the NSW Health Department website for all the facts about vaping.

Vapes are not water. The main ingredient in vapes is propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine or glyercol. Vapes can contain the same harmful chemicals found in cleaning products, nail polish remover, weed killer and bug spray. They just don't put it on the pack. Vapes come in a number of flavours such as blueberry or bubble-gum that make them appealing. Many vapes also contain nicotine, the same highly addictive substance found in tobacco cigarettes. Testing has shown that vapes labelled 'nicotine-free' can have high nicotine levels. People can think they are using nicotine-free vapes and can unknowingly quickly develop a nicotine addiction.

SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM

Year 10 vaccinations are taking place this Thursday 11 May

Keeping your child up to date with routine vaccinations helps to protect them from serious preventable diseases such as meningococcal, whooping cough, tetanus, and cancers that are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus).

As part of the NSW School vaccination program, students in Year 7 are offered free vaccines for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (dTpa) and human papillomavirus (HPV). In Year 10, students are offered the meningococcal ACWY vaccine.

Parental consent is required for your child to receive routine vaccinations at school. If your child is in Year 7 or Year 10 this year, you can now provide this consent through the online consent portal by clicking login with a ‘Service NSW Account’.

Read a step-by-step guide on how to provide consent online. Translated guides are available in Arabic, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese.

From February 2023, children in year 7 will now only need one dose of HPV vaccination. This change has been endorsed by ATAGI based on evidence showing that one dose provides the same level of protection against HPV as two doses.

If you have already consented to your child receiving two doses of HPV vaccine, they will only receive one dose.

If your child previously missed their second dose of HPV vaccine, they are now considered fully vaccinated and do not require a second dose.

A small number of students who are immunocompromised are still recommended to receive a three-dose course of HPV vaccine. If your child is immunocompromised, please discuss their immunisation needs with their GP.

If your child misses a school vaccination clinic, you can speak to your local GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccination.
