Kunstenaars Tobias Asser, Matt de Groot en Jonat Deelstra onderzoeken wat het betekent dat tegenwoordig autoritaire leiders zoals de Turkse president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, de Filippijnse president Rodrigo Duterte en de Hongaarse premier Viktor Orbán worden gekozen door een meerderheid van de stemmers. Terwijl ook de regeringsperiode van Trump als populistische autoritaire organisatie in de VS ‘democratisch’ verlengd dreigt te worden. Neemt de polarisatie, tussen bevolkingsgroepen ook in Nederland toe? Hebben we invloed op deze ontwikkeling? Wat zijn onze en hun reacties op deze gebeurtenissen? Daarover gaat de expositie ‘Dictatuur’.
ENG The dividing line between democracy and autocracy sometimes seems to blur. Artists Tobias Asser, Matt de Groot and Jonat Deelstra investigate what it means that nowadays authoritarian leaders such as the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte and the Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán are elected by a majority of voters. While Trump's period of government as a populist authoritarian organisation in the US is also in danger of being 'democratically' extended. Is the polarisation between population groups also increasing in the Netherlands? Do we have influence on this development? What are our and their reactions to these events? That is what the exhibition 'Autocracy' is about.
NL In de nieuwe schilderijen serie van Jonat Deelstra heeft de kijker het voor het zeggen. Jonat schilderde aan de hand van een vragenlijst. Hierin kon de websitebezoeker invullen wat hij moest schilderen, in welke kleuren, met welk materiaal, hoelang hij er over mocht doen en zelfs wat hij mocht eten en drinken tijdens het schilderen.
ENG In the new series of paintings by Jonat Deelstra the viewer has the upper hand. Jonat painted on the basis of a questionnaire. In this questionnaire the website visitor could fill in what he had to paint, in which colors, with which material, how long he was allowed to use it and even what he was allowed to eat and drink while painting.
NL kunstenaar Tobias Asser roept in zijn werk op tot kritisch denken. Zo beeldt hij door te schilderen en met gebruik van een Xerox printer figuren af die blindelings bevelen opvolgen. Daarnaast protesteert hij met de ‘ik roep NEE vogel’: een vogelfiguur afgebeeld op een poster die luidkeels ‘Nee’ roept. Tobias: ‘binnenkort zal de vogel door heel Amsterdam te zien zijn.’ Eerder verspreidde hij een poster met de tekst: ‘Ik ben de koning’ waarmee hij zich uitsprak tegen het koningshuis.
ENG Artist Tobias Asser calls for critical thinking in his work. By painting and using a Xerox printer he depicts figures who blindly follow orders. He also protests with the 'I shout NO bird': a bird figure depicted on a poster that says 'No'. Tobias: 'soon the bird will be seen all over Amsterdam'. Earlier he distributed a poster with the text: 'I am the king' with which he spoke out against the royal family.
NL Kunstenaar Matt de Groot vergroot in zijn werk beelden uit die stereotyperend zijn voor een dictator. Denk hier bij aan heftige handgebaren, muntstukken en vlaggen met het gezicht van de dictator. Matt maakt voor zijn foto’s gebruik van een zelf ontwikkelde techniek waarbij de foto (inkt) in epoxy wordt gesmolten.
ENG Artist Matt de Groot enlarges in his work images that are stereotyping for a dictator. Think of violent hand gestures, coins and flags with the face of the dictator. For his photographs Matt uses a self-developed technique in which the photograph (ink) is melted in epoxy.
