The Cross of Gold Speech

The Cross of Gold speech is one of the most famous speeches in American history. It was given by William Jennings Bryan. Bryan was a congressman from Nebraska. He was a powerful orator. He won the Democratic nomination through his emotional plea for free silver.

His speech was given at the July 8, 1896 Democratic Convention which was in Chicago. Through images from the Bible and his visible passion towards the heart of his speech, Bryan stunned his audience. Both Democrats and Populists nominated him for President. Unfortunately for Bryan, he lost the election.
