Golden Gate Bridge Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans across the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide stretch of strait linking San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The bridge was developed by engineer Joseph Strauss in 1917. Its Frommer's guide to travel refers to its Golden Gate Bridge as "possibly the most stunning, and certainly the most photographed bridge on the planet." When it was first opening in 1937, it was the longest and the tallest suspended bridge on the planet, with a main stretch of over 4,200 feet in height and an overall high of 746 feet.
