“Drip”

Thomas Rex Beverly (b. 1982)

"Drip" is a captivating and dynamic percussion ensemble piece composed by an emerging contemporary composer. The work was written in 2021 and premiered in a live performance in a contemporary music festival.

The composition is scored for 1-4 djembes, a type of West African hand drum, and electronics. The title "Drip" reflects the piece's theme, which focuses on the sound of dripping water as a metaphor for the cyclical nature of life. The use of electronics provides an atmospheric accompaniment to the djembe's percussive sounds, creating a rich and textured sonic landscape.

The piece begins with a series of syncopated rhythms played on a single djembe, gradually building in intensity and complexity as other djembes enter. The rhythms are characterized by interlocking patterns, where each djembe plays a unique rhythm that, when combined with others, creates a complex polyrhythmic texture. The piece's use of dynamics and phrasing is well-executed, creating a sense of tension and release that propels the music forward.

The electronics serve to enhance the rhythmic complexity of the piece, adding layers of texture and atmosphere to the percussive sounds. The use of filters, delays, and other effects creates an otherworldly sonic environment, complementing the djembe's organic sounds.

Throughout the piece, the composer employs a range of extended techniques, such as slapping and muffling, to create a variety of timbres and textures. The individual djembe parts are skillfully crafted to create a seamless whole, with each part contributing to the overall rhythmic structure.

The central section of the piece features a series of call-and-response exchanges between the djembes, creating a sense of dialogue and interaction. This section builds to a frenzied climax before resolving back into the opening theme.
