Preserves Canopy Strip Survey

Abstract...

My classmates and I were put into pairs. Multiple tasks were assigned like: creating our Canopy Strip Survey, Line Transits, watercoloring of a nearby Shortleaf Pine, taking a the core out of a selected tree, and watercoloring the core of the selected tree. By collaborating with my classmates we, as a whole, were capable of completing all these tasks.

Densiometer Protocols...

  • Look up through the densiometer and make sure it is directly vertical.
  • Make sure the nut/washer is below the intersection of the crosshairs at the top of the tube.
  • It is recommended that you only use the densiometer to look up.
  • If vegetation, twigs or branches touch the intersection of the crosshair, it would be recorded as a plus sign (1).
  • If vegetation, twigs or branches do not touch the intersection of the crosshair, it would be recorded as a minus sign (0).

Line Transit...

Protocols

Materials:

  • Compass
  • Tape measure
  • String
  • Two stakes

Set-up:

  1. Align partner with magnetic north, approximately 100ft.
  2. Align the measured string due north for 100ft.
  3. Place stake in ground
  4. Place measure string parallel to tape
  5. Stake the string to create line transit
  6. Move along the line transit, and for every three feet note the presence or lack thereof for noted vegetation
  7. Record data

Definitions...

  1. Canopy: the uppermost layer or habitat zone which is formed by mature crowns
  2. Sub-Canopy: directly underneath the canopies, typically consisting of small trees
  3. Shrub: small, medium-sized woody plant
  4. Graminoid: grass-like plant, leaves are mainly blade-shaped

Sub-canopy: 12/34 = 35%

Shrub: 10/34 = 29%

Graminoid: 9/34 = 26%

Watercolorings of Line Transit:

A&A's Canopy Strip Survey...

There were a total of 26 canopies within mine and Abel's strip. When divided by 34, we can get a percentage of 76 for how much area the canopies take up of the strip.

Canopy Strip Survey as a Whole...

Total number of trees: 90

Reflection...

Going to the Preserves is always a trip! Ms. Sonia and Mr. Davis assigned us a partner, mine was Abel. Here are some photographs and a video of what we did out in the Preserves for two days.
