In April, our celebration of the Easter season continues as does our special attention to reverence creation during Earth Month.

As we embrace the signs of Christ’s Resurrection, we encourage you to reflect on the ways our schools are nurturing young leaders animated by Mercy through the five Mercy Education Core Values. The newest edition of Mercy Impact focuses on two of these values:

Walsingham Academy

Williamsburg, Virginia

Walsingham Academy’s Junior Class spent their Theology Service Day Retreat at Williamsburg House of Mercy on February 7, 2023. These students were able to do the necessary legwork needed for weekly food distributions and a monthly clothing and housewares market. The food distributions keep food on 1,150 tables each month while the monthly market serves an average of 85 families per month. Each year the retreat aims to drive home Catholic Social Teaching principles of teaching students matters of human dignity, the call to participation, and putting the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.

Holy Cross High School

Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines

One of the highlights of the spirituality development program for students is the annual retreat. Grade 12 students had their retreat March 12-18 led by facilitator Sister Elvie Dantes which helped them focus on self-reflection and connect to their spirituality.

The school held an informational session on Katarungang Pambarangay Law on March 15 with speaker Hon. Anthony Chua Dahili. He shared brilliant and inspiring ideas about Katarungang Pambarangay Law, which addresses inequalities in access to justice experienced by marginalized communities. The presentation helped participants become more aware of concepts of peace and harmony and to be more responsible in their duties as young Filipino citizens, the hope of the nation.

Merion Mercy Academy

Merion Station, Pennsylvania

Merion Mercy's Mission Week in late February was dedicated to fundraising and activities relating to the Mercy Girl Effect Project. This year’s effort is “School in a Box,” collecting funds to purchase educational materials for the Mukuru Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. Among the highlights of the week were a different dress theme for each day, raffles for an array of donated items, and lunchtime games like bingo. Attention was also given to service and the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy.

In late January, Merion Mercy Academy introduced its Diploma with Distinction signature program. The Diploma with Distinction program encourages students to build confidence by scaffolding and coordinating the skills they develop in core courses into specific, interdisciplinary concentrations. These concentrations bridge classroom learning with authentic, purposeful actions within Merion and as part of the larger community.

Their outreach teams engage thousands of individuals experiencing chronic homelessness each year. In addition to offering them resources for housing, safe havens, and shelters, teams carry these hygiene kits as a way to provide some basic necessities and show support for those in need.

Students in grades 4-6 participated in the Invention Convention at Gwynedd-Mercy Academy Elementary. This week-long opportunity to apply the 21st century skills of creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking encouraged students to explore endless possibilities to solve everyday problems and present them to the school community.

Dr. Peter's presentation addressed the theme of responsibility for and to each other. The presentation helped students think about this question: "How Can I Help?"

Mater Christi School

Burlington, Vermont

Mater Christi first graders recently completed a heartwarming service project — handmade blankets gifted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Our first-grade students took the initiative to earn money for their project by doing extra chores at home. With the funds raised, they purchased fleece fabric from a local store and worked in pairs to cut and tie knots on each side of the blankets. Each blanket recipient will also receive a personal note from the students, informing them of the special care that went into their creation.

Together we take Mercy into the world!
