Adams Update november 18, 2022

No School Next Thursday & Friday - Happy Thanksgiving!

To everyone that is part of the Adams Elementary family, we wish you all the best for this upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. There will be no school next Thursday, November 24 & Friday, November 25.

Parking Lot Reminders

As the weather becomes cold and the streets and sidewalks are covered with snow, here are some parking lot reminders for you, to help keep everyone safe.

  • Pull forward as far as possible (just not into the bus lane by the flagpole) when you are along the drop-off/pick-up lane.
  • Have your children enter/exit the car on the passenger side, directly onto the sidewalk.
  • Do not park and get out of your vehicle on the road, or in the pick-up/drop-off line! If you are walking your child to the school, please park in the parking lot first.
  • Continue to give each other grace and patience in the parking lot. It models patience, care, and leadership for our students, and helps to keep everyone safe. Thank you!

Reporting Absences Through ParentVUE

Parents/Guardians can report student(s) absent via ParentVUE. This feature appears as a blue button titled “Report Absences” on the app's main page or website.

  • Parents/guardians can report absences for a single day or multiple days.
  • Report each student individually. Do not enter additional students in the notes section.
  • For each absence reported, parents/guardians must provide a detailed note explaining the reason. If you report your student as sick, please list the symptoms your student is experiencing. The note will help school attendance staff select the correct attendance code.
  • If you have a legal or medical document, please provide it to the school attendance staff upon your student’s return to school. Parents/guardians can still call to report an absence at 989-923-6037.

PYP Learner Profile Day, December 7

Midland Public Schools would like to celebrate our 10-year PYP journey with a Learner Profile Day for all our elementary and pre-k students! On December 7, students and staff are encouraged to use their creativity to dress like one of the attributes of the Learner Profile. This is not meant to be a burden of shopping and planning, but rather an opportunity to get creative with items found at home! Please reference the flyer for inspiration and ideas for each Learner Profile trait. We can’t wait to see the Learner Profile in action and celebrate how far we have come in our PYP journey as a district.

Lucy Calkins Writing Curriculum Update

As you have heard before, MPS elementary schools are in a multi-year process of implementing new curriculum for Reading, Writing and Phonics. This is the second year of the Writing curriculum for our K - 5 classes, and all Adams students recently completed a narrative writing piece. You've probably already seen your child's finished product, but if not, please ask them to tell you about it. The next step for most classes will be an Informational Writing piece, so be on the lookout for that soon. Thanks for helping your children with their writing, and Great Job! to all of our Adams Atoms--we enjoy watching your writing skills grow.

Social-Emotional Learning: Self Management

Mrs. Ferguson, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Specialist, helps all of us, every day! Her message this week is the following: our focus this November and heading into December is self-management. A person with strong self-management skills is able to manage their stress, control impulses, and set and reach goals. Self-management can be broken down into three subcategories: emotional regulation, physical regulation, and self-discipline. Students who are emotionally regulated know how to respond and care for themselves when feeling big emotions. Physical regulation can be described as understanding what is comfortable for your body and feeling in control of it. Finally, self-discipline allows students to put forth their best effort. Students who are able to self-regulate have greater self-esteem, learn better, and can contribute to a high-quality classroom environment.

You can encourage your student to self-manage by talking with them about recognizing when they feel a big emotion and knowing what it is that will make them feel better. Tools to grow this skill could include going for a walk, doodling, or writing in a journal. Goal setting, and discussing what is/is not within their control, both at home and school, can also be effective. You can find several book recommendations on the SEL bulletin board outside of the front office. I appreciate your support in empowering our students!
