CIO Statement/Mission Statement
The Center for Information Technology Services (CITS) is the central information technology organization for UMB. Our mission and focus is to treat UMB students, faculty, staff, colleagues, and co-workers as treasured customers. Excellence in service to the UMB community is our challenge and responsibility.
CITS Overview
Composed of six areas, the Center for Information Technology Services provides IT maintenance, support, and oversight to the entire University of Maryland, Baltimore campus. These areas are Technology Operations, Technology Services and Support, Information Security and Compliance, Enterprise Applications, Administrative and Academic Systems, and Data Analytics and Reporting, detailed below:
Technology Operations includes Infrastructure Services (which implements and maintains the central computing data centers and infrastructure [i.e., database services, messaging systems, Microsoft systems, UNIX systems, computer operations and data storage] for the campus enterprise computerized services), Networking and Communications Services (which maintains the University Unity communications systems, as well as the campus computer networking systems), Identity Management and System Integration, and Web Applications & Development
Technology Services and Support includes IT Support and Software Licensing, Central Administration IT Support and Services, IT Training and Communications, and the Student ERP System.
Information Security and Compliance strengthens the security for all University-owned systems, with additional consideration for those systems that have access to sensitive data, monitor industry trends, investigate, locate, and mitigate IT security vulnerabilities, and ensure campus compliance with state and University System of Maryland audit and data security regulations.
Enterprise Applications implements and manages administrative systems, including Quantum Financials, eUMB, HRMS, and Banner.
Administrative and Academic Systems implements and manages academic systems, including Kuali Research, Blackboard, Philanthropy IT Systems and Services, DocuSign, ImageNow and MediaSite.
Data Analytics and Reporting implements and manages data, analytics, and reporting systems including Quantum Analytics, Data Cookbook (data definitions, data quality, & report documentation), and the Data Warehouse. This office supports the entire University’s analytic needs and enables the university to leverage insight for data-driven decision making.

School of Pharmacy Poison Center Network Segmentation
This project successfully set up separate virtual local area networks for the Maryland Poison Center servers and workstations, as well as appropriate firewall rules. Completed: August 24, 2021

Implement AiM to replace TMA for Facilities
The UMB Facilities work request portal, TMA, was replaced with a more robust, easier to use solution called AiM from Asset Works. Completed: September 14, 2021
Institute of Human Virology (IHV) Move to the Maryland Bar Center (Fiber and Phones)
CITS handled the fiber connections and phones for the IHV move to the Maryland Bar Center building. Completed: September 30, 2021
Establish Virtual Large Area Networks (VLans) from Campus to Amazon Warehouse Service (AWS) for MDREN and MAX
Established the use of Maryland Research & Education Network (MDREN) and Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX) to connect UMB’s campus network to Amazon Web Services (AWS). Completed: September 30, 2021

PaperSave – Electronic Document Management Replacement for Philanthropy
Replaced the Electronic Document Management (EDM) system for Philanthropy to a cloud-based system called PaperSave. This project also converted our processes off of Laserfiche. Completed: October 8, 2021
Microsoft Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) to Replace Symantec
Replaced the Symantec technology threat detection/assessment solution with the Microsoft Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) solution (now known as Microsoft Defender). Completed: October 15, 2021

Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) to Gen 2
We successfully migrated to the Gen 2 platform, which enables us to securely connect to on-premises endpoints (databases/systems) for reporting. Completed: November 9, 2021

Conversion to Baltimore City 911 Service (RedSky)
All calls to campus 911 are now transferred to the Baltimore City police (including those with the Maryland Poison Center), using a solution called RedSky. Completed: January 19, 2022

Advance – Entitlement System for Philanthropy
Created a front-end entitlement system to request and review access to the Advance system. Completed: February 2, 2022
Elastic – replaces LogRythm for log management
Replaced the server log management software system LogRythm with Elastic. Completed: February 4, 2022
NetIQ Transition to Microsoft Identity Manager (MIM)
Moved off the eDirectory product NetIQ and onto the Microsoft product, Microsoft Identity Manager (MIM). Completed: February 8, 2022
MDREN and MAX Establish Virtual Large Area Networks (VLans) from Campus to Azure Express Route for CITS
Established the use of Maryland Research & Education Network (MDREN) and Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX) to connect UMB’s campus network via Azure Express Route. Completed: February 26, 2022

Lobby Guard - Visitor Management System
Replaced the paper-based visitor tracking method (used in campus buildings that have guards) with a visitor Management system, Lobby Guard. Completed: March 2, 2022

Financial Edge – Entitlement System for Philanthropy
Created a front-end entitlement system to request and review access to Financial Edge. Completed: March 2, 2022
Data Warehouse Nightly Load Time Reduction
The project reduced the nightly load processing time so that all data is loaded by 8am each business day in the Data Warehouse. Completed: March 4, 2022
PaperSave – Entitlement System for Philanthropy
Created a front-end entitlement system to request and review access to PaperSave. Completed: March 18, 2022
Oracle 19c Upgrades
Upgraded all Oracle databases to version 19c. All applications that can support Oracle 19c have been moved. All other applications will need to be upgraded before they can move. Completed: March 21, 2022
Infortel – Replacement for Mysoft
Replaced the Mysoft telecom call accounting software with a new system: Infortel. Completed: March 28, 2022
School of Nursing Building – 1st Floor Renovations – Networking
Coordinated needs for fiber cables, wireless connectivity, telephones, and power. Completed: March 28, 2022
PCI Compliant Routers for Parking
To ensure Parking’s network is Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliant, a small Cisco firewall has been installed for their network with a router placed between the connectors. Completed: March 28, 2022

Banner – Current Curriculum
This project enabled a student to correctly enroll in more than one curriculum and bill them accordingly. Completed: April 1, 2022
Strategic Planning Tracking System (SPIMS)
The Web Development Team created a university-wide tracking system for the departmental goals to support and fulfill the university’s strategic 5 year plan. Completed: April 7, 2022
Migrate or Replace eTravel system (Discovery)
During this Discovery phase, we chose Concur as the Travel and Expense solution to implement. Completed: April 11, 2022
Banner Reports Pilot for School of Nursing
Enabled the School of Nursing to convert legacy Banner student data reports written in Crystal Reports and MS Access to Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC). Completed: April 15, 2022
Data Center Core Replacement at HS/HSL
New core switches have been installed, configured and activated. Completed: April 21, 2022
Oracle Human Capital Management (HCM) – RFP Phase
This phase of our HR system replacement was to choose a 3rd party implementation planning partner via a Request For Proposal process. We ultimately chose Huron. Completed: April 30, 2022

UMB Portal Replacement
Replaced the old portal, which was based on a PeopleSoft product we no longer rely on, with a new portal designed and built by the Web Development team. Completed: May 14, 2022
