The Conservative Synagogue community gathered to celebrate their Rabbi: a perfect 10.
The synagogue is just over 30 years old, meaning that Wiederhorn has been at the helm for nearly a third of this time. “I am so proud and blessed to be a part of this special community, and can’t believe how fast the time has gone,” Wiederhorn said.
At the fundraiser, many people, including the President of the synagogue Nancy Cohen, gave speeches honoring Wiederhorn and his accomplishments. Wiederhorn himself also gave a speech where he talked about the “10 Cs” that represented the central ideals of The Conservative Synagogue. Maya Wofsy ’21 remembered how she was able to connect with him while preparing for her bat mitzvah. “He is overall very interesting and you can always learn something new from him, especially during his sermons during the high holidays,” Wofsy said.
Wiederhorn is not only a leader of The Conservative Synagogue, but serves the entire Westport community as President of the Interfaith Clergy Association of Westport and Weston since 2011. In this role, he has helped the community come together during difficult times, including the recent anti-semitic attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. He explained how one of his biggest challenges throughout the past 10 years was “bringing the entire interfaith community together following the Newtown and Pittsburgh shootings,” Wiederhorn said. “They were dark and challenging times that ultimately provided much light for our community.”
Wofsy also commented on the Rabbi’s ability to bring the congregation together. “He has brought our temple together as one whole community in a way that we were never before.” Wofsy said.
Every year, Wiederhorn leads a trip to Israel for families from The Conservative Synagogue to attend. Evan Siegel ’20 attended this trip two summers ago, where he felt he was able to bond with Wiederhorn.
“The Rabbi, although not serving as the main tour guide, really helped us understand all aspects of Judaism and what it means to be Jewish throughout the entire trip,” Siegel said. “He has been a large part of the Westport community and I feel learning and interacting with him throughout the years has been a privilege and an awesome experience.”
The Conservative Synagogue was thrilled to celebrate this milestone with Wiederhorn, and looks forward to the next 10 years of his service. “My main goal is to continue to help the Jewish community connect and feel even more engaged,” Wiederhorn said. “Whether it’s educationally, from a social action perspective or spiritually.”
