December 23rd The Fourth Week of Advent

Today's Readings: Malachi 3:1–24; Psalm 25; Luke 1:57–66

I am the Lord, I do not change. — Malachi 3:6

I am suspicious about the accuracy of thermometers. This year has involved a lot of temperature-taking, with traditional thermometers placed under the tongue, digital versions for use under the arm, and even the oh-so-quick forehead scans. But I’m always surprised at how much the readings can vary. How accurate are these things, exactly?

So many people believe there are no absolute truths today. Self-serving behavior is widespread and tramples God’s moral law given for the protection of society. Our world prides itself on "freedom" that is really nothing more than slavery to sin (Rom 6:16-17).

But there is a God of absolutes whose “temperature readings” are always accurate. With Him, a degree is a degree, right is right, and wrong is wrong. He says, "I am the Lord, I do not change" (Mal 3:6).

For you and I, as followers of Christ, this stiffens our spiritual spine. Our courage grows in the face of difficulty and we are assured by the fulfillment of every divine promise.

If the Creator of the Universe were easily moved by every whim or notion, our promised glorification would be in constant jeopardy. But because he is the Unchanging One, we "are not consumed.” As we move ever closer to Christmas, may we reflect on the graceful reminder that God—the one who never changes!—desires not our destruction but restored communion with his people!

"His compassions fail not. They are new every morning." — Lamentations 3:22-23
