Art and Nature in a Factory The Volklingen Ironworks is many things including a UNESCO WORLD CULTURAL Heritage site

What happens when an iron factory closes?

The view from inside the factory shows nature taking over.

The factory is located in the German town of Volklingen in Saarland. The site covers six hectares. As it did back then, the ironworks site dominates the city.

The ironworks factory is in a state of disintegration.
The factory was a former pig-iron production facility
No other blast-furnace complex exists today that demonstrates how pig-iron production was made.

The Volklingen monument illustrates the iron production history of the 19th century and how this region, the Saar-Lorraine-Luxembourg area close to the French border, became a hub for industry.

Once, nothing green could grow here. But today, nature is taking over again.

The ghosts of former factory worker linger. Production ceased in 1986 but not much has changed in the factory since the 1930s.
Nature is creeping in and art fills the factory walls
As a cultural monument, the factory has become a historical site and an art gallery.
